I had bought a macbook air that had problems recently ... The genius's at the applestore allowed me to get a new one since it was only a few weeks old. I then asked to get a macbook pro which was allowed as an even exchange. A few days ago, the LCD display started showing a "spotlight" effect from the bottom of the screen. I immediately brought it back to the store (oct.10th) which they allowed yet another exchange (macbook pro 2.4 base ). I brought home the "new" box (which is still unopened). I asked the genius if i could buy applecare, and if so, what date it would start from... either the original date(oct 1) or (oct 10), the date from the return... she said the current date (oct 10) ...My home page is mac rumors..so when i returned home, I saw the confirm that the new models would be out oct 14th..my question is ,since i have not opened this pro i was given (oct 10th)..can i take it to the applestore on the 14th and exchange it for the new model??? that would be def. under the 14 day policy... thanks!!

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 14TH :) :apple::apple::apple::D:apple::apple::apple:

Take that 2.4 and put it up on ebay/craigslist. Problem solved. :D

Yeah, you could return it. But I think there's a 10% restocking fee.

Eat it if you want the new one. But at least wait until Tuesday to make sure you actually WANT the new model.

restocking fee???

I thought they waived the restocking fee IF the box was not opened??? I don't see why they would not take it back if its only a few days old... I thought maybe someone bought a macbook/pro right before an update and successfully swapped it out a few days later for the current model..FYI... when i was waiting for the genius to get my macbook pro from the back...i thought i caught a glimpse of a large pallet... the store i go to ..the door for repairs is close to the wireless stuff..(airport cards) i was waiting back there for them.. this was on the 10th.... i had asked for a matte screen..he said" hopefully we have some.i know we only had a few left .." hopefully this means the 14th will be the day they will be on sale...

They do waive the restocking fee if the packaging is still intact (or unopened).

But I am not entirely sure if you could exchange it, did it go down as a full return and then another purchase, or was it simply an exchange? Because if it was the first one, then you definitely can, but if not, then I am not entirely sure.

just check receipt....

I was looking at the receipt right now..it says return date: october 24th...which is 14 days from when i got this macbook pro.... this is telling me what is the LAST date i can exchange it....so using that..i can probably still take it back on the 14th and swap out for the new one..im not going to open it..hopefully they are already sitting in the back of the store.. does anyone know when they do come out..is there a long line to get into the store (i phone)???

I really doubt the lines will be anywhere near as long as for the iPhone, etc -- and a lot of people order online in order to customize it. Especially if it isn't released on October 14th I think a lot of people will pre-order it instead of showing up once its released.

i have a question....so if I get a replacement 2.4 base MBP as a replacement to my crapped out 2.2 MBP by calling Apple. Say i leave it unopened and take it to the Apple store and present it as if I bought a new one and ask for a swap within 14 days, do you think that would work?
btw i didnt mean to hijack the thread or anything...

ethically not advisable, but I really could not care less!:D

I have got a brand new 17" BTO order machine coming from China as I write this. If the new machines are better spec. The machine will be going straight back, I have already cleared it with apple.

...

parthc007.....if you get a brand new (sealed) macbook pro from the apple store as a replacement...i don't see why you couldn't swap it out as well... as i stated earlier...i looked at my receipt i was given by the genius for my return..there is a part on there that says return date: oct xx ...this is there telling you the last date you can take it back ..it should be 14 days from the exchange... whenever you take something back, the date used to calculate the applecare start date and exchange date is the most recent day you went in for a return.. so on my receipt ..the day is oct 10th..return date as: oct 24th.. it should not be unethical for you to NOT open it and take it back for the new model.. say you get the macbook tomorrow and leave it sealed, if you go back the following day and try to exchange it..the system will show the purchase dayte as monday october 13th..giving you a "new" start date for applecare to start from AND exchanges ... hope this helps ;)

Just have to remember, if Apple gets tired of the games ... they can and do intercept the machines and process a refund of the "original purchase price"

A member here came to complain because they lost their upgraded spiffy new medium or top end PowerBook Apple had swapped them up to, so they sent in a $2x00 machine that they eventually were upgraded to due to all the problems, and got a $1x00 refund for their original iBook Purchase.

Nobody felt sorry for him either.

New ones are *always* better spec...well, except according to the leaked photos where they're TAKING AWAY ports like gangbusters. The speed and HD will all be better fo sure.

And who can blame them? The amount of people who think its ok to scam them just astounds me. I don't think Apple should let you exchange a replacement at all, you're lucky they're good enough to do replacements. Lots of companies won't. Getting a 2.4 for your old 2.2 is already an upgrade, be happy with it. If you want to update it then sell it on eBay (as new/unopened) and buy the new one.

I will be returning my MBP 2.4 for the newer model. It was a replacement for a problematic machine. My receipt gives me until the 16th to return.

did you get it in store or directly from APPLE, either way does it make a difference?

I will try to call apple and get mine upgraded to the new one if they do...as it hasn;t been shipped yet.....if not, I will get the 2.4 Ghz and just show up at an APPLE store in toronto...hoping for a exchange for the new one!

well call apple, and ask to speak to a product specialist....let them know the problems you are having and how frustrated you are....let them know that you switched to Mac hoping that it would "just work" and ended up having more problems than a pc...in my case, I told them that i am an engineering student...and getting my computer fixed every couple of months has had a big toll on my studies.... and its frustrating.... Eventually they'll succumb into giving you a new one...
GOOD LUCK!

This has more or less been my experience. Customer Relations seem especially susceptible to stories of inconvenience. I've only ever complained to Apple about legitimate problems, but I do not feel any contempt for people trying to make questionable returns, exchanges or upgrades. Apple deserves to have to make replacements and upgrades for letting quality go to Hell. Even someone trying to "scam" Apple regarding replacements and so forth probably has a defect of some sort whether they realize it or not.

I will try that i am just waiting until the new ones are released. Does any one know if they can replace it in the store if i ordered online?

It's funny how many of these threads pop up right before confirmed updates.
