iPad Pro Returned M4 day after

I was looking forward to the OLED screen. What a huge disappointment! The function keys on the new keyboard are much appreciated. I returned both. Hopefully, Apple will make more significant changes like adding MAC OS.

So you don’t like it because it’s not a macOS machine? Sounds like something that shouldn’t have been a shock to you.

I still like my iPad Pro and the new M4 version just was not enough to fork over a bunch of money over. I’m more prudent now and will wait until I can’t use this iPad Pro anymore or something that I, and no one else, will think is a proper upgrade path. each his or her own. But I’ve fallen off the Apple Kool-Aid after so many years of just incremental improvements. Just not worth throwing away good money over something that is nice, but not too compelling.

I went from m2 to m4 and it feels like day and night.
better brightness, better colours, better contrast. But the absolute joy was in near darkness. No more blooming!
so far the m4 didn’t heat up when connected to an external 5k display and being driven well with 5 active apps.
and that all in an 11” frame instead of the 12.9” I had before.

Why did you go from 12.9 to 11? 12.9 OLED feels the same in the hand as 11 LCD iPad Pro.

What type of psycho reads in the dark with light text on a black background? Do you just hate your eyes? 😀

Seriously? That‘s how I read ebooks in the dark on my iPad; it’s far more comfortable to me than blasting my face with a white background and black text in the dark.

Hell, I pretty much keep all my devices in dark mode 100% of the time nowadays; it’s all light text on dark backgrounds for me, and when I try to go back I find it very uncomfortable.

Yeah, their comment made zero sense. Light text on a black background is how you're supposed to use it, not the opposite. I read in the dark before I fall asleep with my Kindle this way, coupled with the orangey hue of night mode.

Coming from the 2020 A12Z iPad Pro, I love the current gen iPad Pro after my first night of usage. Lighter device plus lighter keyboard are very welcome.

That’s where I’ll be coming from. I use my A12Z iPad Pro as a cellular thin client. No real need for added performance, but the lighter, and function-key equipment keyboard, and nicer display/new battery compared to my current, was reason enough for me.

I ordered the model with the display coating - doesn’t arrive until June but excited!

I think the discussion on Macbreak weekly this week was pretty good.

TLDR and for those who don't listen the consensus is that the iPad M4 is fantastic hardware but is significantly limited by the iPadOS software - for example in background processing, cross-app resource sharing and the file manager. Even with the keyboard, it's functionality is not an approximation of the mythical touch-screen mac.

Clearly it is a fantastic device with great potential... but really needs iPadOS to step-up and fully exploit the capabilities.

You'll see bloom in extreme circumstances on mini-LED.

Yeah the extreme circumstances are “at night” lmao. I’m not a mini LED hater but pretending bloom is basically nonexistent is so silly. Blooming is noticeable and does look bad. It is a trade off of the tech. Not being honest about it is hacky 🤷‍♂️

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from these forums (and reddit for that matter) over the years it’s that people are visually sensitive to different things, often to widely varying degrees. The whole PWM thing, for instance, is something that I never in a million years would have noticed or thought about, and I keep my devices extremely dim 99% of the time.

My wife swears she sees absolutely no difference between a device with ProMotion and without.

So it might genuinely not be something that some people notice.

I saw this at the Apple store yesterday and it looked really nice.

I got the 13” iPP and I’m loving it. Upgrading from a 5th generation 12.9” iPP. I’m mostly indoors so the standard display is OK.

Part of the point is that the issue is now much more pronounced with an M4 chip and all the power that brings.

The OG (2015) iPad Pro had an Apple 9x chip (2 Cores/2 Threads) that is now massively outperformed by the M4 chip (9–10 cores comprising 3–4× high-performance and 6× high-efficiency. Far more cores, higher frequency. Apple M4 is a true flagship workstation capable chip.

So, sorry it is not the same missed potential. Not by a long way.

Considering how, yes, the iPad is majorly held back by software...I could see why an upgrade from the M2 to M4 would not be worth it. Probably isn't for the vast majority of people.

I was on a 2018 12.9 with an A12Z though, purchased in 2020. Pleased with the upgrade.

There is no "blooming". There is the normal contrast you'd expect from bright white on top of total black which is, of course, strong when the colors are right. Most content isn't like that however, so it's not really an issue.

That discussion has been ongoing for years; it is neither novel nor insightful at this juncture to point out that the iPad is overpowered for the software it runs. Literally every single reviewer has been making that point since M1 came to the iPad, and they‘re always imploring Apple to either port macOS or “more pro apps” to the iPad to take more advantage of the hardware.

I’m sure it’s a great podcast but I’ve heard the discussion so many times now that, even though there’s truth in it, it’s a little boring.

I'm on the fence about it. I've owned every OLED iphone, several OLED TVs, the mini-LED 12.9 M1 and a MBP M3 Max 16"

I'm just not sure how much better the screen can be. OK if you sit side by side you'll notice a bit better contrast or pop (which could be considered over-saturation) on OLED. You'll see bloom in extreme circumstances on mini-LED.

But the blacks are real black on both technologies, and that's the thing most people notice and go wow at.

Timmy said it's the biggest change since the iPad was launched ... I'd say mini-LED was, and OLED is just an evolution of that, to the eye.

Nah, this OLED display is the biggest upgrade to iPad since it launched in 2010 in my opinion.

It used to be a virtue to ship a product that is blazing fast and not technologically throttled. But somehow that’s a vice with iPad because vocal armchair product designers are upset that Apple won’t subjugate its product vision to theirs. The hubris is laughable with some even going so far as to invent the product names that Apple should use without a clue as to how ridiculous that behavior looks — yes, I’m referring to Federico Viticci and the MacPad. 😏

If you have ever held a formal Product Management role you are accustomed to everyone having an opinion about what your product should be/do — often without doing their homework to qualify their suggestions/demands. Professionals also recognize that listening to users is a good thing so they cultivate the skill of suspending judgment in the service of learning something they don’t know from unexpected sources.

However, the expectations for professionals like Viticci are higher. Federico is a talented professional who I respect and admire deeply. He reports on Apple and Apple products for a living and has access to people who can, and I’m sure, have, provided insights into the complexity of product management role for a global product like the iPad with a specific design intent and the need to keep it aligned with other products in the Apple product portfolio. The expectation is that at a minimum professionals like Federico will be respectful of the people making these decisions and demonstrate humility when making suggestions. Other people can make lay people mistakes, but pros cannot. In this case it’s as if Federico became intoxicated with his cleverness and became convinced that his Frankenstein was not only clever, but also a thing of beauty -- so much that he actually brought the MacPad to the Apple London iPad event. Seriously, how middle school is that! 😂

I’m glad that Federico has come down to earth and instead of just making a clumsy case for MacOS on iPad Pro, he has written an article identifying issues he sees with iPadOS. This is not only not-ego-driven, it is actually helpful and would have had way more benefit for iPad proponents than alienating the people inside Apple who are in a position to make changes vs presenting his Frankenstein as the vision of success for iPad. 🙄 But better late than never!
