How can I test for UI lag?

Maybe I was lucky... I bought the same model, I got it with a samsung screen and its perfect, I have 0 image retention and can't find the UI lag that I couldn't replicate on my old cMBP (2008 c2d) - its usually related to resizing specific windows.

cMBP for me too

I got the 2012 15 inch cMBP high res/anti-glare 2.7 setup, and upgraded it to 16GB RAM and Sammy 840 pro 512. I am impressed by the Retina, but I have my own reasons for going classic:

1. I use external monitors quite often (as well as capture and render video), and it tends to work the graphics card really hard to do so. The classic MBP graphics card doesn't have to work quite so hard to run its own monitor, leaving some power on the table for the external monitor/other tasks.

2. I like the up-grad-ability of the cMBP.

3. I don't care for glossy screens.

4. The cMBP seems sturdier.

5. I don't like buy the new versions of stuff. It seems that manufactures improve their products, and the cMBP is really at the top of its game in 2012.

Nothing against the retina at all, just my thought process.

tbh you can run retina @1440*900 during that time and the GPU is overclocked, so technically it would work better. And its completely usable @ that res, granted, not nearly as good, but usable (or 1680*1050 nonHiDPI)

I'm in the same boat --- got the cMBP even though I really love the retina display. Swapped out the optic bay with a Samsung 840 SSD, and now the cMBP is a VERY capable machine. I know the 840 Pro would make it even faster, but I don't really have the need to go that far, at least for now. So now I have both the speed AND the capacity AND the (relatively) low cost, which is something you can't achieve with the rMBP.

The rMBP is a wonderful machine, but I'll be dealing with too many dongles most of the time, which would be a total drag.

Congratulations on the purchase!

Edit:
Oh, and to make things a little better, the cMBP I got has the matte high res display (1680x1050). Nothing to complain here!!!

Congrats! It was a tough decision for me between the two myself so I understand where you are coming from. I don't usually buy a computer more often than maybe 4-5 years so I ended up going with thr Retina based on a lot of the pluses you mentioned. It really all boils down t what you want so I'm glad the classic fit your wants and or needs

Yeah I though about that as well, but combined with my other reasons (especially the anti-glare screen), Im very happy with the classic.

both computers are awesome honestly. I'm happy with my retina, was thinking for a month before I decided which one to choose, then I remembered that I wanted a 13" 4 years ago, that had no firewire... :)

I just got the 13" retina. Out of the box, it did run kind of laggy and crappy. Then I applied the 10.8.2 update and the latest patches and it runs super smooth now. Love it!

How is the speed of the macbook after you put in the 830? I'm thinking of either the 830 or 840 pro. After 1 day i've already had enough of the 5400 rpm lol.

with an 840 ssd and 8gb upgrade, my base 2012 13" gets higher geekbench scores than the listed average for the base retina 13"
now obviously thats an average but my scores were pretty much the same on every test

dont know what kind of people conduct the tests, but my retina high-end also runs fairly above average (400/500 above) @32bit.
probably people running stuff in the background.

based on the geekbench list. the score they list for the standard 2012 13" is the smae as wheat i got pre upgrade.
