iPhone Air Returned the Air ... wanted to keep it. UPDATE: Bought it again!

I get that Apple doesn’t mind as once the sale goes through, it’s all the same to them. I am not in the market for an Air. I was interested but did my research and now know that it's not the right phone for me. I am thinking about other people who want the Air.
Airs are a dime a dozen lol no one buying them, pros are as scarce as hens teeth.

Research was done first.
Now, based on that research … “would I be able to live without the wide angle?”
I’ve shot photography and video for a while, shot some weddings and so on. I’m out of doing paid work.
Outside of that the phone had become my main camera, always at hand.
So I bought the Air to find out.
Well, I found out.
I also found out that panorama wasn’t an adequate substitute. I found out that other apps, like Final Cut Camera, couldn’t overcome the lack of a wide angle lens.
Could I settle for missing wide angle lens to have a svelte, lightweight, larger screen than the Pro yet smaller than the Max.
It turns out I could not. I could live without the telephoto, without the RAW formats.
So I returned the Air, nice and minty, to the store.

I thought i would miss it, but honestly the wide angle lenses have never been great. there is always so much distortion on the edges of near shots with their wide angle lenses that i do not miss it at all. I am coming from a 16pro max
There’s a wealth of video reviews on YouTube showcasing the Air’s capabilities, especially around the camera; something that clearly matters to you. That kind of content could’ve helped inform your decision before buying.
As I mentioned, I’ve got no issue with you personally returning the phone. But when a large number of people do the same, it creates stock problems for those who genuinely want the device and are ready to commit.
You brought the Air back in pristine condition, sure, but it’s not going back on the shelf. It will be resold, as a certified refurb, or offered as an AppleCare replacement. That unit’s essentially out of circulation now.
It does have that fisheye look.
Oftentimes it can be corrected in post, photo editor, video editor.
I came to the conclusion that I’d rather have the option of not using it than not having it at all.
An example right now is that I’m at the Miami Intl Auto Show and I found myself immediately using wide on my 16P for both photo and video.
I’m seeing a 17 Pro in the near future lol

Everyone who is like "you knew before"... nothing compares to actually using a product. You can read about it, look at spec sheets, watch YT videos, even playing with it in store - nothing can replicate day to day use. That's why return policies exist. People need time with product.
This was the biggest deal breaker for me too
I also was really disappointed with the quality of the speaker. If it was better quality mono likely wouldn’t been the issue I had with it. It crackled easily.
And if you compared the iPhone Air against the 17 Pro in addition to "the lack of wide angle is rather glaring" you would also find that the lack of really good telephoto is rather glaring.
Agreed on speakers. Despite owning multiple sets of Airpods and CarPlay I use the built-in iPhone Pro speakers maxed out fairly frequently listening to audiobooks.
It is good then that you do not have need for macro photos ever. The ultra wide lens does do a good job on macro, and when shooting macro competence at the corners is not usually essential. Even not shooting macro I find the UWA lens essential and the corner distortion mostly irrelevant to my needs.
In my opinion, what is important is whether or not the phone performs as you need it to. Unless you never have access to a power outlet during the day, (or even a portable charger) what the battery ends at at the end of your day percentage wise (30-80%), is really immaterial. At that point, the focus changes to meaningless numbers.
I respect you ascertained you needed more camera and changed course.
I would opine that depleting a brand new late 2025 iPhone to 30% battery with typical usage should indeed raise a red flag about that phone for that user. New iPhones in 2025 generally do much better than that, and 30% at week one will equate to 0% at week 51.
Sure we can charge mid-day, etc. to cope. It is easy enough to have MagSafe pads at multiple locations. But it should not be necessary with the right brand new phone choice.
Well I’ve returned my Air and got a deep blue 17 Pro. Loved the Air and it wasn’t an easy decision after using it for a week.
Guess I couldn’t live with the single camera as there’s been a few times I’ve wanted the ultra wide lens and extra zoom, especially for some portraits from a distance. The extra battery life will also be welcome.
Having held both now, the Air is definitely more premium and elegant and feels better in hand & just hits different with its thinness, I’ll miss that but have gained in other areas.
Function over form in my case. Big battle with head vs heart!

Weird discussion. We compare phone from its camera features. It’s a phone anyway. Other alternative: iPhone Air + mirrorless camera. You don’t need professional camera most of the time, do you?

It’s a shame and I’m still second guessing myself! Head over heart… hopefully I’ll grow to love the 17 Pro!

I don't "love" the Pro but I'm happy to have it with me. It's the better choice for me.

It’s nothing to do with you. Apple is happy or they’d introduce restocking fees. They’d also put them in stores to see and feel on the day of the announcement if it were an issue. Wind your neck in. Apple doesn’t care that you’re sick of people exercising their rights.
Also, the Air is widely available, so your statement above re Air availability is wrong.
For those finding Air’s single camera inadequate, perhaps you should also consider the normal 17 before hopping straight to Pro.
