I recently bought the 20 inch iMac (customised with 256MB X1600 and 2GB RAM) off the online Apple Store, and after using if for a few days, I want to send it back. However on my order status under Returns, it says that I can't send it back, but it doesn't state why other than "Item not eligible for return".

I've read suggestions that you can't return custom iMacs, but nowhere in the Apple Store's T&C does it state that you can't return custom hardware. I'm also still in the 14 day timeframe for returning products.

So, can anyone help me out here?

For the future? Yeah, read return policies. They're there for a reason.

Custom-Configured Product

Apple offers certain products that may be custom-configured to your specifications, and Apple encourages you to review your order carefully. Since a custom-configured product is built to your specifications, the order cannot be changed, modified, or canceled once your order is in production. Please review Apple’s return and refund policy carefully before ordering.

An error on my part, but I'm British and as such bought my iMac from the UK Apple Store, and there is nothing regarding custom-configured products in the return policy.

Rule number 2: When asking advice, be specific where you are and under what circumstances. Of course policies and contacts differ between countries. In some countries, local law trumps the 'standard' sales terms that are applied in the US.

Like, I've read on a lot of BBC forums that you are supposed to drive on the left hand side of the road  OMG Have I been doing it wrong for 30 years !?!

Solution: Contact your particular vendor and ask. Don't rely on internet forum second hand opinion for detail about your specific contractual rights and obligations.

From this page on the Apple UK site

If you change your mind, you can return your Standard or Configured-to-Order hardware to us within 14 calendar days of delivery.

That's something new that I've learned today... ;)

I'd guess that the self-service web option doesn't allow it since it's not allowed in most places. I'm guessing that it might be something to do with the Distance Selling Regs in the UK although I thought they did allow exclusions for custom-orders. I'd give Apple a call and point them to the above page.

That I didn't notice, so thanks. I'll ring them up first thing Monday.
