Late last year, former Apple designer Imran Chaudhri and former Apple software manager Bethany Bongiorno launched one of the first AI wearables under their Humane brand. The $699 Humane AI pin did not go over well, and many reviews criticized its poor performance.

Humane is continuing to struggle, and now, returns are outpacing sales. According to The Verge, more AI pins were returned than purchased during the period between May and August. So many pins have been returned that there are only around 7,000 units still in the hands of consumers, with around 10,000 initially shipped out.

The company only sold around $9 million worth of AI Pins in total, and it is trying to deal with $1 million in returns. Humane cannot refurbish returned AI Pins due to a technical limitation with the cellular connectivity, and returned units are simply e-waste at this point.

Humane also faced a problem with the Charge Case for the device, which was found to pose a fire risk. Humane sent out emails to customers telling them to stop using the Charge Case Accessory. Refunds were not provided, but customers were given two free months of the Humane subscription service.

Humane raised more than $200 million from investors, and had planned to sell around 100,000 pins during its first year, but poor performance seems to have sunk the device. The Verge claims that pre-launch family and friends reviewers raised concerns about the functionality of the AI Pin, but it was launched despite the feedback.

A Humane spokesperson told The Verge that there were "inaccuracies" in the financial data that the site obtained, but specifics were not provided. Humane said that the company remains "committed to unlocking a new era of ambient and contextual computing," and that there have been software updates to address user feedback.

"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should"

Why would I use AI Pin when a watch with chatgpt functionality is infinitely superior?
That takes me back to this classic Mr. Show skit.

How these jokers raised so much money with such a terrible idea and execution is beyond me. Did these investors REALLY think the average joe would be clamoring over this and people would be rushing out to buy it?

Did they ever think to try it? If they werent using (yummm dogfood) it why would anyone rlse?

Good riddance. Dont give these jokers more money for their next big harebrained 'idea'.

”Cannot refurbish the device”? Somebody didn’t think this through. I doubt that the founders could have been so hopelessly optimistic about everything going absolutely flawlessly… which, ironically, has proven to be the exact opposite.

When the first money was raised, they were actually a little ahead of the AI hype curve. This project has been going for several years, and certainly was underway before Chat GPT blew up nearly 2 years ago. So there was some truth to the “catching the AI wave” from the investor perspective. It’s just that the product was no good, which is the only asset the company really has to help or harm its reputation. And we all know how that went.

It was a product that didn't need to exist... yet the founders collected hundreds of millions of dollars in investment.

Not many people need AI at the moment... especially always-on AI from a pin on their shirt that cost $700.

And those who do need AI will just get if from their phones eventually.

Some people might say the Humane AI Pin was a product ahead of its time. But I'm still wondering when exactly the time for a dedicated AI device is supposed to be?

🤔

Just watched their video on their website. Basically just ex Apple employees doing an Apple style marketing video. Except, their product is rubbish. And their Apple-esque hype was just cringe to watch and not at all believable.

Anyone who bought one must have more money than sense and can swallow a loss.

Articles like this kill a business, there is no way back now.

Return it quickly if you still can.

Else, enjoy it whilst you can. Get your monies worth. Lol

Execution aside, a mobile device that relies on voice interaction doesn't work because there are too many situations where dictation is unsuitable.

Unlike that Rabbit device that could've been an app, I do think Humane's device had some interesting ideas. But at $699 with a required subscription, it's way too expensive for a device that can only supplement a phone at best.

"Humane" is a weird name for a pin device. They designed the name before they designed the pin.

”Humane cannot refurbish returned AI Pins due to a technical limitation with the cellular connectivity, and returned units are simply e-waste at this point.”

What in the hell? They can’t factory reset the devices and add a different cellular plan? Talk about a dumpster fire

I can’t help, but think the problem is their execution and the state of what they can offer right now.

Their core idea. To have technology available just not looking at the screen is coming quickly. To be fair, a good chunk of their idea will be delivered by Apple next year with Apple AI and Siri improvements. You can activate Siri with your AirPods and get something more akin to this.

I kept seeing him as Saul Goodman...

The $99 bluetooth accessory version that connects with ChatGPT (or soon, Apple Intelligence) on your phone makes so much more sense to me. Camera, mic, speaker, bam. The sensor edge for AI in your Personal Area Network.

I can't imagine what these folks were thinking.
