I’ll be keeping an eye out for changes, all I can say for now is that Apple Maps finally stopped asking me to make an illegal left turn at a roundabout that no longer exists in my route to the locale shopping mall.
It’s not big deal cause it was obvious there was no way to turn where it told me to but it was annoying considering that roundabout was removed months ago.

Actually it’s a little more complex than that, initially I had correct directions, then suddenly it started asking me to take a left on what’s essentially just an opening to allow pedestrians to go through and now it doesn’t anymore.
Furthermore I think the actual cartography has finally been updated to not show that stretch of road that technically is there but vehicles are not allowed to run through

Roads are weird :)

Apple Maps is crap. I can't use it because it is so poorly written and designed. They now turn everything green, even in my area of the concrete jungle. If there is one frigging blade of grass within a square mile, they paint the entire area green. You can’t see the streets for the green coloring anymore. You can't find parks because of all the green areas which are not parks camouflage them. They seem to be catering to foot traffic more than automible traffic, which in most of the country, and world, is just clutter. Sadly I still have to use Google Maps.

I don't understand why Apple keeps their top software idiots onboard. They a clearly morons. They screw up all the apps and FW. They need directors who actually use their apps and products to design the software, not visionaries who can't see the forest for the trees, or the streets for the grass...

It seems like for every step forward Apple make with their map app, Google makes 5 steps. Sure Apple added the “My Guide” which I was really excited for, but it’s half baked. It’s missing handy features like selecting colors and icons that Google’s My Map has. Oh and why can’t I remove the “Editors’ Picks”? Apple needs to really put more effort into their maps or just go back to using Google’s.

los The new Apple maps will arrive in the Dominican Republic when we are a rich country.

It’s a repetitive cycle, in countries with a majority of Android users (most of the world outside the US & Japan), business and POI are always more up to date and accurate in Google maps because most people use that, forcing iPhone users like myself to use Google for actual / reliable navigation, diminishing Apple maps use even more.

Maybe Apple should consider developing Android and web apps that can fully compete with Google to boost usage across the board.

Agreed, however considering how slow Apple are with updating it for their own platform, I would not bet on it. Google Maps are much more advanced on both platforms, take the AR overlays for walking navigation, for example. While Apple are toying with idea, Google are using it under a Beta tag and it works really well on iOS, IMO. Apple need to seriously app their mapping efforts or make a deal with Google. They could both barter, with Google staying a default search engine on Apple devices (for free) and Apple devices could then use Google’s superior POI database to feed Apple Maps backend.

Most people i know use Apple Maps without issues, I surely personally know more people who use Apple Maps than Google Maps. Also funny when Apple Maps fail, the same happens in Google Maps very often.
lol I remember one time I went on a little road trip with my friends and we were of course using Google Maps cause “lol Apple Maps bad”.

We had to switch to Apple Maps at one point cause Google kept asking us to drive straight into the wall of an underpass to get to the road above.

Apple could have saved a great deal of time and money by licensing Google Maps. It is the industry standard and much superior to what Apple has incrementally "fixed" for the past decade.
They used to. But they they caught another bad case of "not invented here syndrome" and decided to do a much worse job of it themselves, and force their garbage maps to be the default on iOS.

I actually find the current version pretty good in major European cities. Obviously google had a head start w/ maps but Apple is catching up nicely, especially with transit directions.

Semi-related : The other day google told me to drive through a rest area on the highway to avoid traffic and shave a minute off my time. I scoffed at the suggestion but it seems that others took the suggestion and added to the traffic problem by trying to merge into the highway from the rest area.
Waze has been doing this for years. Hate it too.
didn’t know google Maps imported this asocial “feature”.

Apple Maps is my default, I find it a lot nicer to use than Google Maps and works just as well from my experience in the US and Western Europe.

Plus removing Google from like life is always a plus. No more heavily censored search results!

I'm convinced most people still dumping on Apple Maps haven't used it in the last few years.
Of course not....I'm starting a YouTube channel that compares mapping apps and this is one of my first examples...Apple Maps versus Google and the pros and cons of each. I have both an iPhone and Pixel so I can compare and contrast all mapping apps on both platforms. Gonna be fun...hah!

Also...glad to see they fixed the Leaning Tower of Pisa to actually "lean"...it was a little "vertical" in the initial preview release.

I live in Italy - is this update supposedly live now as I am not seeing the new features?

They may have announced it, but only on the Italian newsroom portion of Apple's website. US newsroom doesn't say anything (yet). I've done multiple hard restarts and nothing has shown up, but I expect it will by Monday at the latest for everyone.

I just checked Look Around in Rome and it’s working. I’m in Boston, Ma USA.

Google forced Apple to build their own map when they withheld features from iOS to give Android’s maps app an advantage. Critically, Google never allowed turn-by-turn navigation, which was only added to iOS Maps in iOS 6 after Google was dropped.

Google was willing to do the turn by turn but only if Apple gave confessions like more access to users data while in the maps app. Google saw before Apple how to monetize maps. Apple figured it out and has been hard at work catching up since.

In July of this year, Apple began testing its revamped Maps experience across Italy, following rollouts in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal, and Spain. Apple has now officially launched those Maps improvements in Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, and Andorra, according to MacStories.

The update brings a raft of previously unavailable Maps features to the regions, including Look Around, lane guidance, speed camera data, 3D buildings, Siri Natural Language Guidance, and improved navigation. The update also adds more detailed road coverage, and faster and more accurate navigation.

Regarding the rollout, Apple's senior VP of services Eddy Cue provided MacStories with the following statement:
Apple Maps received a major overhaul in iOS 15 and in addition to new details in cities, an interactive globe, and enhanced driving directions, there are a handful of other smaller features that will be available.

Other new Maps features include 3D road level perspectives for complex interchanges, step-by-step augmented reality directions when walking, a redesigned transit experience, new place cards with updated info about businesses, improved search functionality, and a dedicated Maps user profile for reporting issues, selecting favorites, and choosing a preferred mode of transit.

At WWDC 2021 last month, Apple announced that its revamped Maps experience would be expanded to all users in Italy and Australia later this year.

In early 2020, Apple said it would begin rolling out the revamped Maps experience across Europe in the coming months, so other countries should soon follow. The updated maps provide more comprehensive views of roads, buildings, parks, airports, shopping malls, sports venues like baseball fields and tennis courts, and other details.
