This will allow me to keep my iPhone 12 for one more year. But I do plan to replace my iPhone 12 with an iPhone 16 Plus 512 GB or a "regular" iPhone 16 Pro 512 GB.

The XS is lasting well. The iPhone X was only supported to iOS 16 yet the XS is going to at least 18.
If the XS indeed gets iOS 18, then it will be like iPhone 4 getting up to iOS 7 and iPhone 4s getting up to iOS 9

While iOS 15 runs very fine on iPhone 6S, it’s traditionally been very hazardous to install a new OS on a very old phone. Often it ruins it.
If you care about your older phone - absolutely don’t install iOS 18 on it until at least JUNE 2025 when it is deemed safe to do so.
I’ve had several older iPhones ruined by newest iOS updates. It’s really risky.
In fact I’d go so far as to say that iOS 18 will likely be malware on iPhone XS and iPhone 11

Apples and oranges (pun not intended)

Those older phones pre-A9 used much slower chips

a12, a13 are still very capable chips. Heck using the iPad 9 (a13) on iPadOS 17 is a dream, using the iPhone 11/11 pro on iOS 17 is super fast and smooth

These are not the same as using an iPhone 4 on iOS 7 or 4s on iOS 9 type of experiences

They better support some AI features on the iPhone 15 Plus, even if it is not done on-device (opt-in)!
That might be a hard no. :( The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus use the older A16 SoC, and the Neural Engine may not be powerful enough to run AI featuires. The iPhone 16 Pro models could do it because the Neural Engine on the A17 Pro SoC may just make it for the AI features.

Hunh?

No,

the iPhone 4 only received 4 versions of iOS support and the 4s only received 5

This will mean the XR/XS get 7 versions (and who knows if they will get more next year)

Google and Samsung do now too, and they don't control as much. This can be said about battery efficiency, but not about software updates. There are Android phones released in 2015 still working today. I know many people who still use the iPhone 7 Plus is in great shape as their second phone.
So just half the stack? Come on dude, u haven’t the slightest

I’m very glad that AI features are largely kept off older devices, and this was a reason I’ve been hesitant to get iOS 18 when it comes. I’m still going to get it late and see how other devices handle it first.

I’ve lived through multiple instances of completely fine iPhones getting absolutely destroyed from the new demands of an iOS update (most notably the iPhone 4s. Which if you jailbreak it and downgrade its updates, it’s no longer incredibly slow).

Still baffles me that iPhone 14 Pro is rumored not to support AI.
Especially considering that the iPhone 15 does have THE SAME A16 processor as the 14Pro, which would mean:
- either the 15 "regular" doesn't support any AI
- or the 14 Pro doesn't on purpose, which would mean an immediate lawsuit against apple...
According to Gurman, the on-device AI capabilities will largely require an iPhone 15 Pro or later to work”

Lmfao I’d love to see this. Apple is not legally bound to bring new features to your old iPhone

That sounds almost as ridiculous as the woman suing the nice cream shop because her pistachio ice cream doesn’t actually have real pistachios. It has pistachio flavoring.
On the other hand, should Apple offer users the option to only install security updates for supported major software releases, users would be happier knowing there’s an option to not drag their devices down to a crawl with newer major software releases.
You have a choice

1. Buy a new iPhone
2. Update your iPhone.

Expecting apple to have multiple variants or versions of software and maintain them all is a bit silly.

Also imagine the nightmare when ppl are confused because they don’t know which version of the update they are installing. That goes against apples mantra of “it just works”.

On top of that, it’s 2024. My brothers iPhone 11 is slower than my 15 pro max but it performs very well still for a device as old as it is so newer updates aren’t a problem these days for older iPhones.

That’s the sad part. Apples older phones work and perform better than newer mid range android phones with the same specs.

Google is promising 7 years of updates, which is very good too.

If the major players settle on 8 years of support in the end, it will be fantastic for consumers. The trailing hardware is becoming more and more powerful, so there are less concerns of the updated software lagging.
Still, using android is an inferior experience but finally google is at least trying to support their products for once.
Deja vu? What's with the article rehashing?
Apple keynote is today so it’s not surprising.

Pheww, glad to see my iPhone 15 Pro Max there /jk

Seriously good support but just remember just because it's compatible doesn't mean you'll get all features. 8GB RAM/256GB is probably going to be requirement for on device features.

Why is it that macOS 15 , tvOS 18, and watchOS 11 are all allegedly/rumors while iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 supported devices seems to be already confirmed when WWDC 2024 reveal of OS system requirements has not yet happened?

Sure it will support older phones but how much sluggish will they be if they update to this version?

And if they restrict AI features to the 15 Pro, they better brace from some negative PR.

Why would AI not be supported <iPhone 15? I’m already multiple “AI” solutions on my iPhone 14Pro. Might not be on device, but already running at great speed. Will be interesting to see what will be said about this during WDDC

RAM. It's probably as simple as that, when it's all boiled down. All Macs have at least 8, 14 Pro and 15 have 6.
That makes sense now that you say it. Nothing to do with neutral engine but everything to do with RAM. Not I am thinking we will see iPhone 16 and 16 Pro getting a bump in RAM to future proof it for AI

Just like the iPhone 15 with the same A16 and 6GB RAM as the 14 Pro got the 24mp photo option and my 14 Pro didn’t get it.
