Just some info, I'm in the same boat as the OP, bought a 15" MBP for protools and it came with no Snow Leopard disks. I phoned Apple Australia and after some persistance and lots of time on hold, I have convinced them to send me a free copy of the 10.6.6 restore disks that came with this machine when it was first released.

At first the support agent wanted me to buy a copy of SL retail. I explained that there were 2 problems with that...

1. It wont install (seems I know more about the issue than he does)
2. I'm not willing to pay for it as I just spent $2700 on a brand new CTO machine.

I was transfered to a "senior agent" and after explaining the issue he agreed to send me a copy of the disks free of charge.

I'll let you all know how it goes when they arrive next week.

You tried Pro Tools 9.0.5? It supposedly works on Lion.

windows allowed reverting back from Vista - why not mac?

When I bought a laptop with Vista pre-installed, the manufacturer shipped a downgrade disk (1st class, overnight from the US, free of cost) so I could go back to XP.

My experience with Lion over the past month has made me crave the same service.

I'm pretty angry over all the wasted time because of bugs and most of all: the missing "Save As".

I've heard that even if you did manage to get snow leopard to boot it would cause many kernel panics.

That would be true for a SL retail (10.6.3) disc. The disk being sent to me is designed specificly for this model of macbook.

The Apple tech read out the part description to me. It was somthing like "Macbook Pro 15" (Early 2011) OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6 Restore Disc". I'm pretty sure that it will boot and install just fine.

No, not yet. I will certainly give it a try, but stability and reliability in Protools are very important for me, and I know that SL works just fine.

R3alsp33dy0ne ... if they are the gray discs, you should be OK cause its the original restore discs that came with your specific MBP. I should get mine in a couple days too... I havent tried PT on Lion yet but knowing DD, it takes em a couple fixes before everythings back to "normal".

That's part of the problem. The real underlying issue are problems that surface simply by installing Lion. For example machines which had zero problems under Snow Leopard all of the sudden have issues in Lion.

That indicates a serious problem with the OS and I'm surprised at Apple's seemingly lax attitude towards putting out a much more aggressive update/patch/fix.
It's not that Apple has a lax attitude, it's just that they work at their own pace. They are not particularly responsive to issues that effect users until they receive a very high volume of complaints.

Even then their history reveals they do care, but only act if and when they feel like it. Once one has observed how Apple operates, its a lot easier to deal with their idiosyncratic practices. The key is to collapse ones expectations.
