Is there an easy way to go to the public beta of 18.0 from the 18.1 developer beta? I am planning to get the 16 Pro when it comes out and would like to easily transfer my data from my current phone so figured downgrading to 18.0 would be better than being on 18.1.

Possibility 1: Do a restore to 18.0 and apply your backup you made before updating to 18.1 (any 18.0- or 17.x-backup would work, but not a 18.1 backup of course).

Possibility 2: Just stay on 18.1 and update your new 16 Pro to 18.1 once you're getting it. This way, you could easily transfer your current phone to the new one.

A simple "downgrade" from 18.1 without losing data is not supported.

There are ways to in-place downgrade but that usually bricks loads of things. I would just ride it though, Apple is quick about releasing beta seeds for the new devices nowadays.

Had the same question the other day, option 2 is your best bet.

So if I’m on 18.1 right now, but end up getting a 16, when I set it up and log into my Apple ID and select iCloud backup, from there the 16 will be able to download the matching 18.1 beta onto the 16?

Haven’t upgraded and restored when i was on an newer iOS version releasing past the one installed coming on the launch date

No one knows whether Apple pushes 18.1 betas for the new phones. They probably will but it‘s not 100% confirmed.

It is a very safe assumption that they will. However, it may not be available right away.

No, it won't happen automatically since 18.1 hasn't been released yet.

Assuming the 18.1 beta is available for the new phone, you'll need to set it up as new, enroll the device in the beta, install 18.1, erase all content and settings, and then finally do the setup/transfer process.

Another option would be to have the 18.1 beta IPSW file downloaded ahead of time. Be sure to get the right one for the new phone. Then put the phone in DFU mode and install the beta (don't bother setting it up first). After it's installed, go through the setup/transfer process.

That‘s false, Apple allows you to install beta builds during device setup now to restore backups right away.

It will even prompt you with "It looks like you're running a beta. Do you want to install it now?"

Does this only work if you do the transfer option during the Quick Start setup, or does it also do this when trying to restore a backup - either through iCloud or locally?

Unsure about local backups but it works for iCloud and direct transfer.

It should work when you turn the phone on and sign in with your Apple ID. With a new phone, that’s pretty much guaranteed to happen when you take it out of the box.
