You should be able to change the amount of ram and ssd storage. If Apple took their environmental stance seriously they should enable that for all their devices. There are other ways to collect your money by them. Hope greediness is something from the past and 2025 will be the one of innovation.

If you care about the environment above all else, just pay Apple what they want. Or are do you think your own money is more important?

Apple wants to make money, you want to save money. You are just the opposite side of the same coin.

I think it in a review it should be brought up that the M4 chip is the fastest single core processor out there and that single core speed is in many ways the most important spec of a computer. That is worth noting because in that respect Apple is selling an industry leading tech spec for a modest $599 price.

I want my money spent good. Buying more ram or bigger ssd’s from Apple isn’t a good example because it feels as a total ripoff and when comparing market prices for those… it definitely is.

Why do you think paying Apple is good for the environment?

Decided on the MacBook Pro instead of Mac mini. Didn't want to bother shopping for an external display with less resolution. Too bad Apple doesn't have a low cost display under $1K.

With the big difference that 16GB base has been standard for years on PC’s and now a novelty on Mac.
It actually hasn’t been. When I was laptop shopping early last year, a lot of the models out there for sale were still 8GB. They came with more base storage, but I think all of them were pushing 8GB as long as they could.

The M4 series of chips is beyond incredible. As I've said before, Mac Gaming is a real thing now thanks to Apple Silicon and it's only going to get better. My new M4 MBP is a base model and it SCREAMS! I can only imagine what the Pro and Max chips add to the performance. I never hear the fan even after hours of use and I don't suffer 3rd degree burns like my old Intel Macs did.
Qualcomm is coming out with their next generation soon. Their first attempt beat out the M3 in many ways. Just curious how their second generation plays out. Their next generation mobile phone chip is already faster as apples A18 pro. It’s going to be exciting times as Apple is forced to up the ante quite a bit to stay relevant 😊

I think you have been looking at outdated models that were on sale because 16 GB is standard for years now.

Paying Apple Tax on RAM and particularly Storage is ludicrous, ever heard of M.2 SSD T4 enclosures ?
What's with this peer pressure nonsense telling folks not to buy anything but base spec M4 Minis?
Is it coming from those who wish they could have a higher spec machine trying to make themselves feel less insecure about what they bought? That's my theory.
M4 Pro (14 core), 2TB SSD and 64G of RAM. Sweet... Might trade it in for a M5 Ultra Studio later this year.

They upped the RAM on all of their devices with 8GB to 16GB with no price change. Pretty says how much 8GB costs Apple (I.e. almost nothing).
Or maybe it’s more expensive for Apple now to buy 8GB modules if they’re still being made by RAM manufacturers 😂

Only the sub-$1,000 models. Anything over $1K when I was looking had 16GB RAM. Heck, the $1,649 laptop I bought early last year came witha 105W RTX4070 GPU, 32GB RAM (expandable to 64GB) and a 1TB m.2280 SSD and an empty m.2280 port. I installed a $200 4TB SSD into that port a few months ago, for a total of 5TB SSD.

Yes it’s called personal preference.

Big Tech has incentivized migrating to cloud storage. I miss my G5 tower with mirrored internal drives. I do have such external hw but prefer to use it for backup. Call me a data hoarder. ymmv

Thunderbolt 5 effectively nulls the Apple storage tax. You still pay for RAM, but it's no where near the SSD costs.

I bought an Icasis TB5 enclosure for $215, and I already have a gen4 4TB .m2, so this should cover me.

Unlike a laptop, external storage options aren't as intrusive. At least I rationalize that, whatever.

There's a really good review of this drive on YT. He found that there's a read issue with Apple hardware now, as these drives are overloading the system. So Apple needs to update this, which I imagine they will. If the external drive can read at 6000/gbps (writing from the Apple), there's no reason the Destop/laptop can't.

I'd argue that having to spend $215 to get your external storage to work is the opposite of countering the Apple storage tax, but I take the point that it's more doable on a desktop computer than a laptop.

Still, I think rather than making the computer smaller they could have used the space for additional internal slots to put in NVMe drives, which arguably would be better for most consumers. I'm not even convinced that expandable storage couldn't work in a smaller enclosure since most of the small and cheap x86 computers you can buy on Amazon seem to manage.

It's not the end of the world, but it's typical Apple.

Terrible. The placement of the power button will go down as one of, if not the biggest, tech failures of all time. I've actually lost sleep over it.
Not worse than Touch Bar with software escape key or the butterfly keyboard debacle.

I myself don’t feel it as peer pressure. Apple’s prices for larger SSD’s and more RAM are relatively higher. Some people are looking for ways to circumvent that.

But I bought the same setup as you: Mini M4 Pro, 14 core, 2TB SSD, 64GB RAM and Studio Display. Because 1) I wanted it all in a small package without extra peripherals; 2) everything is well integrated; 3) I love to have extra processing power even I don’t need it every day; 4) money was not a problem; 5) I like this setup and I will use it for many years.

I got a higher-end model at launch and just received a lower-end model. It's incredible how well last year's iPad Pro chip performs as a desktop computer. The higher-end one's doing swimmingly with a Windows 11 VM, some server functions, and occasionally a simultaneous game of BG3. The lower-end one can handle BG3 reasonably well, impressively enough, though not at 4K.

I would’ve liked to get a Mini M4 pro, but the price difference being more than double the base model just couldn’t be justified for me

I think I might be on the track to buying base models for the best value and just upgrading them every time a new one comes out

"as one of, if not the biggest, tech failures of all time". Not keen on the power button position either, but after 35 years in tech, I would kindly suggest you do some research on tech failures. I can assure you that having a misplaced power button, doesn't even make the list of tech failures of all time.

I haven't tried yet, but I assumed that it would be possible to run Linux on Apple Silicon by now.
Asahi Linux only supports M1 and M2 Macs so far. There is some work for M3 support being done (not anywhere close to a working release though), but none on M4. This is really only an enthusiast option for older M-series Macs.
