I'm hoping any car that has WiFi will be able to upgrade to wireless CarPlay. There will be mass anger if Apple releases a portless iPhone without a solution for all the existing CarPlay users.
Mass anger like when people complained about no audio jack?
that worked out well for all the complainers out there, I think they thought if they kept crying apple would bring back the audio jack.
can’t wait to hear them cry when iPhones are portless it’s going to be hysterical

Are there any high res aftermarket Carplay head units out there?
I have a Kenwood DDX9905 hi res head unit in my Wrangler with wired CarPlay. I bought the Carlinkit 2 from Amazon for wireless CarPlay, and it’s worked surprisingly well (it does drain the battery quicker than I’d like, though).

Not being able to use your cheap wired headphones is different than not being able to use CarPlay with your $20k+ car. Yes Mass anger would be justified. Apple provided lightning headphones in the box.

Will this replace my tape deck in a late 90’s Corolla?

kidding

but I’ll be interested to see how it does in a 2010’s Venza. I’ve looked at replacements before and usually it’s cone at the cost of the rear camera and/or steering wheel controls and the ha da free calling.

LoL some people get upset over the smallest things,

In all my years of installing aftermarket head units in my various cars, I’ve yet to figure out why some of these head units are so expensive with the features they provide.

For BMW owners, Andream.us has pretty good headunits. Takes longer than usual to arrive since it comes from china but it looks OEM (maybe even better) and it's been working pretty ok for me. It doesn't connect to your phone automatically when you turn on the car which is a bummer but nothing a little fiddling with your phone can't help. Oh there's the wired option too.

I’ve been considering upgrading my after-market gen 1 Alpine for a wireless head unit for just the reasons you outlined (quick short trips). But I doubt I will go with any option that does not provide a physical dial volume button -the one feature I “miss” most (and still do, many years later). Interested in recommendation/feedback from those who are using such units.

you sit far enough from the display that its not really that important to have super high-res. everything on my Pioneer DMH-6350BT is plenty sharp
My car has in cabin WiFi. Am I wrong in assuming a software update could leverage the in cabin WiFi to gain access to CarPlay? I'd prefer not to buy a third party solution to this problem.
it depends what your car already has. the jump from wired to wireless carplay in the aftermarket space meant the head unit needed wifi and GPS in it as this is how its managing the battery drain of GPS on your phone (the head unit is powering the GPS antenna and feeding the data to google maps/waze/etc on the phone)

I would imagine there is other parts both software and hardware. the price difference between two models that Pioneer sell, one with wireless CP and one without, most features being similar besides that, is about $300AUD. not all of that cost is 'feature value' surely.

It's nice to see another individual from the Raleigh area!

Too bad that mall is a dump now. I remember it being packed during the holidays when I was growing up.

Look at the glare in those photos! 😳

Not to worry: as long as you’re careful to keep your car oriented in such a way that you can’t be blinded by the sun’s reflection, I’m sure it’s perfectly safe.

Hi all, I’m looking to add CarPlay capability to my 2018 acura rdx (advance).

But I’m confused on an option I’ve read a lot about called NavTool (good tech, bad customer service) versus installing a system like this Boss one or a Pioneer. Any feedback is appreciated!

Thanks for the article. Your last statement is incorrect. The BE950WCPA does have RBDS support. I own the unit and can confirm. Boss's website also confirms this feature on the BE950WCPA.

That's odd. They specifically told me it didn't support it, and their press release indicates the same:

  • RBDS Tuner (available with BVCP9850W, PCPA975W and DD999ACPW models only)

I'll check back in with them to see what's going on...thanks.

Edit: It was indeed an error by BOSS that they didn't catch until after announcing the products. I've updated the article to remove the mention of the BE950WCPA not supporting RBDS. Thanks for the heads-up.

I purchased this one because of the echo that started with the more recent iOS and wired CarPlay. The echo my callers hear is gone but we cannot figure out how to get the rear camera display to pop up when the vehicle is put in reverse. Everything is installed correctly the wires are connected to the reverse lights and trigger and video wire connected to the head unit. No matter what you have to press the Camera button on the head unit for it to activate the camera display. This is honestly my only complaint about this unit. Everything else seems to work really well.
