Have had an ecobee for a couple years now and it for the most part 'just works'. love having room sensors as i want it to focus the target temperature on for example the bedroom while i sleep and the living room while at work. I have had a few connectivity issues between the sensors and the main unit as they don't seem to report low battery condition early enough but a coin cell battery lasts a year in a sensor and they are easy to replace. One recommended thing to do though is to buy 2 sensors for each room instead of just 1 for better redundancy.

One thing I would like to see though is upgraded sensors that not only have 2 full sensors internally for redundancy but also humidity sensing per room. Oh there is one thing I don't like about it, that when you tell siri goodnight for some reason it does not advance the thermostat into it's sleep setting and good morning doesn't advance it to awake.

Apple needs to sign a cooperation deal with one or two big house appliance makers like whirlpool or bosch and the like.

Set the example for Smart home appliances. Most people don’t have an idea of what HomeKit is!

It's a thermostat. Who gives a crap how that looks.

I give a crap. My Nest thermostat and smoke detectors are beautiful additions to my house. These things are not. The Nest thermostat is also a handy motion-sensitive wall clock.

It's a great pity that Apple fell out with Nest. They should have bought the company when they had a chance, instead of letting Google slide under the carpet.

Love my ecobee3 with the 3 additional sensors so I can decide which room I want to base the temp off of.
More importantly macrumors is based in Cary NC, who knew. I live in Raleigh - if Eric is a UNC fan then I may have to stop reading his stuff. :)

As a user of the Lyric T5 I can say that the Honeywell app is not quite garbage, and also offers some nice granular controls that HomeKit doesn't. The customer service is pretty responsive but like a typical large vendor that specializes in contractor-designed systems, their touch is a little light for my liking. One of my motivators for the T5 was price; I got it for just a shade over $100. If I had to spend the extra money, I would probably opt for the Ecobee instead though.

Its looks too white and plasticky.. Plus also lack of remote sensors. I don't know why someone will choose them over ecobee.
I would. The ecobee looks cheap and plastic-y to me. I like that this puts the temp foremost, and simple rotation to adjust.

Lots of people. You apparently suffer from a common condition in tech — inability to comprehend that different people have different tastes and use cases. We call this ability “empathy”. Hopefully you’ll learn it one day.

All you really need to know is Ecobee. Fantastic thermostats and great customer support.

How do you cool specific areas without a multi-zone HVAC system. No thermostat can regulate vents in a zone individually. It's all or nothing for every vent on that zone. All the sensors do is average out the temp.
FYI Nest is compatible with those smart-vents than can open or close based on your rules. So you can get some degree of room specific use without a multi zone system.

I’m about to join the HomeKit party with a new thermostat. This was very informative.

I would also encourage you to look at the ecobee. I considered both just a month ago, and found the ecobee to have better support, better features, and generally a nicer ecosystem. The "ecobee 3 lite" is a bit cheaper than the Lyric Round, but has a full touch screen, no outer ring (slide the on-screen temperature control up/down instead), full app/homekit/IFTTT control, etc. If you have multiple rooms, the full "ecobee 3" comes with a single other-room sensor (senses when that room is occupied, and what the temp is in there), and additional sensors can be bought (they also work with the 'lite' version).

For me, the ability to have more than the four temperature changes per day Honeywell believes any household should ever need is a huge improvement. Our electricity rate goes up 40% from 4:00-9:00 every weekday (peak electricity usage times), so we wanted to set our thermostat to "supercool" the house from 3-4, then basically shut it down from 4-9. I can confidently say we are saving about $7/day because of this (our usage from 4-9 is lower by $9, but we spend a little more in the super-cool and catch-up periods), and it would simply not be possible at all with any Honeywell products (this per Honeywell support, who responded that I could use IFTTT to set up a schedule which overrides the thermostat schedule for those periods, but ICK!)

(Edit: reading the rest of this thread I am obviously not the first to come forward with this advice...)

"A Nest-like design..."
I don't see myself spending over 150 dollars for a thermostat. They just aren't that exciting anymore. I had an Ecobee 3 which I liked and left with my home when I sold it. I now have a Honeywell Lyric T5 which works just fine.

In case you weren't aware, most electric companies have some sort of rebate when you buy a "smart" (capable of sensing occupancy) thermostat. The $50 rebate I got from PG&E is on the very low end of rebates I've seen others get (I want to say the max was $100 in southern CA which almost paid for the upgrade by itself).

This product is junk. It burns up a battery in five days. Then you get battery low message, which locks up the thermostat making it heat the house when it shouldn't. Looses wi-fi often requiring reset, but it continues to heat the house when it shouldn't. Then it continues to show low battery even with new battery installed. Pressing the cloud button does nothing. It refuses to give me the menu to reset it. What a POS.
