You did a lot of wrong assumptions....
No one wrote the iPad Pro is FOR CASUAL USERS ONLY. Someone wrote it could be a laptop replacement for some casual users.
It's quite different.

Sometimes it's just better to say "I misread it" than insisting on a silly position....

It's in the title of the thread. That makes it pretty important. Obviously I know it's not only for them, but I haven't seen anyone say it's a laptop replacement for Pro users. So who is it for, then, as most every "Pro" user has laptops and desktops? It seems more like a fairly expensive tool to augment certain tasks such as drawing as a part of a bigger workflow involving full size Macs. I'd say for 95% of people out there, they won't be able to start and finish their entire creative production on this device. And I want to be able to do that so desperately.

You see, I've been a constant on this forum since before the iPad was even launched saying that I wanted to be able to create content on a tablet. I said in 2010 that I thought within 5 years people would be seriously creating content on the iPad. I really did say that in either late 2010 or right after getting the iPad 2. I'm sure if you look through my old posts from back then you would find it. And about 5 years later Apple released this Pro. And I am disappointed that iOS as an operating system is so limited even still on such an expensive and powerful device. It's completely ridiculous and we must hold Apple accountable by giving them feedback on how they can improve it to benefit us "Pro" users. I know many "Pro" users who have processing needs beyond my own already feel abandoned by 2013 Mac Pro. And then there's the whole Aperture situation. It's like Apple is making these "Pro" devices only to satisfy the people who get hard from buying anything with "Pro" on it because it's more expensive even though they only use it to check their email and browse the web. Even though for years the main thing keeping Apple float was professional creatives who loved using Mac OS X. Many of us were also the same people convincing others to switch.

Clown Troll: This iPad Pro isn't for Pro's. Its only for watching Netflix. Hey I can do that with a $100 Android tablet.

Doctor: Sorry pal. I use my iPad Pro as my primary work computer.

Clown Troll: Well, that means you are not a Pro.

Doctor: Sorry Pal. I'm a doctor. It don't get much more professional than that.

Clown Troll: but, but, but, but, but, you can't write X-code or use full Photoshop, CAD or have a file system with iPad Pro.

Doctor: I'm a Doctor. Why the hell would I need X-code, Photoshop, or CAD.

Professor: I also use iPad Pro as my primary travel computer instead of a laptop.

Clown Troll: Then you must not be a Professional either

Professor: Dude I'm a Pro......fessor.

Clown Troll: Well you don't count. Like they say those who don't know teach.

Lawyer: Mr Troll I also use the iPad Pro as my primary computer.

Clown Troll: Liar! How can you call yourself a pro if you don't use X-code, Photoshop, or CAD!

Lawyer: Uh...I charge $300 per hour son.

Sales Executive: Mr Troll I also use iPad Pro as my primary travel computer.

Clown Troll: Then you are not a Professional!!!! If you don't use X-code, Photoshop, or CAD you are just an AMATEUR!!!

Momma Troll: Clown! Hey Son! Your Pop tarts and Kraft Mac and Cheese is done!

Clown Troll: Well my executive assistant is calling me. Time to take a break from REAL WORK.

"Pro" is not only a marketing term here, coz they also charge you the price of a "Pro"

Dude, I'm walking out of the Apple store on Thursday with my spanking new 9.7" iPP plus Pencil plus case plus tax that'll set me back $1,578 CDN - and I couldn't care less what you think.

Sweet! Can't wait to get my Pro also.

Many who are bashing the iPad pro are:

1. Apple Haters or
2. Flat out envious that other people have money to buy expensive stuff

Pretty sad. Hate and Envy. That's the stuff that makes people live misreable lives.

I still don't understand what this offers that a laptop doesn't? The 11.6" Air I bought to replace my iPad does everything. And if I wanted Retina I could move to the Macbook. Typing is a PITA on an iPad and if I'm using a keyboard accessory then whats the point? Why not buy a small laptop? And the price is prohibitive as well.

I still find websites that for whatever reason refuse to work correctly on an iPad and that will always be a deal breaker.
Excellent question. I just bought a 12.9 iPad Pro. I plan for it to replace both my 11" MBA and iPad Air 2. (but will keep the MBA for now, the Air 2 goes to my wife) The MBA is absolutely the best notebook I've ever owned. The Air 2 is the best tablet I've owned (and I've own far more than any person should be allowed to).

But I really want a converged device. The Surface is too notebook-heavy (use case-wise) for my tastes. The iPad Pro is still too tablet-heavy but closer to my mobile needs.

There are some things that are simply better done via a touch interface. Others are best using a traditional keyboard and other physical input. Having a device that can straddle that line or come close is what I'm looking for.

For touch interface, nothing beats the iPad IMO. For those times when I need OSX I can remotely connect to my iMac. I tried that on the Air 2, and it worked well. The only downside was the screen size. The 12.9 Pro solves that.

I guess it comes down to flexibility. The Apple Smart Keyboard (although overpriced, IMO) has a nice feel to it and is quite comfortable to use. It is easy to remove and/or rearrange, going from tablet to notebook-like. That is one of the things that I loved about the Surfaces that I've owned. (the quality of the experience is another story entirely)

But obviously it isn't for everyone. Out-of-the-box it probably isn't for me either, but I've been on the quest for a converged device for so long that I'm willing to think out-of-the-box of my daily workflow and use cases to make it work for me. :)

Sure, but have you seen the price they ask for the plastic snap-on covers for the Macbook Airs, from companies like Speck? And the pencil won't work on a Macbook -- so that's not even a fair comparison.

I'm not arguing the new iPad isn't a significant financial investment.... But just saying I think the price probably makes sense for what you get. Some people are totally against buying a Macbook Air right now because it lacks a higher-resolution "retina" or 4K type display - which they feel should be the new standard for everything you buy in 2016. It's all about which features you want for the money.

And after adding a pencil and keyboard / cover, costs just as much as a MacBook Air.
[doublepost=1459272316][/doublepost]I work in I.T. but I'm not paid to do graphics or web design, so in that sense -- maybe I'm less qualified than some to comment. But I do support people who work in those areas. My thought is, first of all, that yes - investing the most in a high end desktop workstation still makes the most sense. I see a trend in the whole industry where everyone wants to be more and more mobile. They're chasing after the lightweight, slim and shiny, without enough regard to how much performance/power they're giving up in the process. But ultimately, I know I do my best work when I'm sitting in my favorite computer chair, at my desk where everything is laid out the way I like it -- and I have several big monitors, a good full-sized keyboard, etc. If I'm honest about it, I just don't get that much real work accomplished, by contrast, when I'm out and about with an iPad or a laptop. Even when we're talking Internet or network connection speeds alone, it's SO much better to be plugged into a wired Ethernet link from my desktop than fighting with dodgy wi-fi on my portable.

So I lean towards doing things the way you're considering.... I have my iPad Air 2 that I take with me each work day. That lets me do things like read the morning newspaper while I'm on my commute to the office and answer a few emails. If I was an artist and had the new iPad Pro with a pencil? Then I'm sure I could do a little bit of drawing on it too -- at least to get a rough sketch or outline made, to upload to DropBox to finish from a desktop machine later.

But despite also owning a Macbook Pro retina 15" over here, I wind up keeping that guy in the carrying bag, in my closet, quite a bit of the time. I might take that on a client visit or if I'm working on a Saturday in a remote office, doing some network maintenance or what-not. But in a pinch, I could let it go and still be 99% as productive as ever between my desktop workstation and the iPad.

So here's my dilemma:

Since I'm a professional Graphic and Web Designer, I am looking to replace my late 2007 Macbook Pro and 3rd Generation iPad. However, I do also have a Mac Pro tower at home that I use for higher-end work. I would like to reduce the amount of work I'm doing with my "mobile devices" (aka my laptop and iPad) and use mobile for minor work and client presentations but stick to, and invest in, the tower for the rest of my work.

Would this new iPad Pro be a decent move? I'm just not sure since the iPad doesn't run any desktop apps from Adobe and the only coding app that runs in iOS is Coda. My other option would be something like the Microsoft Surface Pro 4. But after comparing the Apple product to the MS one, I feel that the stylus severely under performs compared to the Apple Pencil.

Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

What can I say?

Coming from a Windows PC, laptop, Android Phone and Android Tablet. Then switching to Mac, iPad, iPhone has been night and day. Apple products JUST WORK.

Until they don't. Or the two year software upgrade renders it slow and laggy, or the graphic card dies, or the heat kills the motherboard, ..

There.

You are back to reality.

I'm just not feeling it. I mean it's really just an iPad Air 3 with $100 more and half the storage.

It is not an iPad Air 3 and "half the storage" of what?
I am not feeling your comment frankly.

...Or as much as a ton of bananas.
But they are not quite the same thing.
[doublepost=1459273514][/doublepost]
People who are calling this a "pro" product obviously have no need to run any real "pro" applications like Final Cut, Photoshop, Illustrator, or the myriad of other pro applications real professionals use on a daily basis on either their PCs or Macs. Calling an iPad that doesn't run Mac OS a "pro" product is laughable at best.

Have you considered that some people might not need those products to conduct their "Pro"fession?

Mate, I'm not going to replace my MacBook Pro any soon with an iPad. For me a tablet isn't a laptop replacement. That wasn't my point.
But there are different people with different needs, and for someone a tablet is enough, and this, with all its limitations, is a great tablet.
How many are "someone"? Speaking about an iPad they still are MILLIONS of users, not exactly a few.
We should stop judging someone else needs based on our experience.
Believe me, I can't go into detail but in our organization we are using iPads mini and iPad 4 to manage gears which costs raging from 9 to 35 MILLIONS OF DOLLARS EACH. Using commercial and proprietary apps.

The Mac Pro is an entirely other matter. Apple is wrong on that. They should update it or retire it from the market, just like the Mac mini.
I never said Apple is always right.

If you use a Macbook as an iPad then an iPad Pro might work as a Macbook substitute. Otherwise, iPad Pro can only do a small subset of what a laptop can do and a laptop hybrid with touch and pen makes the iPad Pro obsolete.

My question would by why NOT have Time Machine as an option? Have you seen the storage available in the latest iPads? That could be a significant yearly fee to use iCloud. At the same time, wouldn't it be cool to point Time Machine to iCloud on your Mac if you want an automatic off site backup?

I proposed this exact same thing on the Apple iPad Feedback. Would be nice to access a NAS Share (for time machine backup)

WRONG.

I've had my Mac for 3 years. ZERO problems. It runs just as fast as I bought it. Can't say the same thing about the countless Windows machines I bought through the years.

I've had iPhones/iPads for the past 3 years also. Again smooth as butter, ZERO problems. That's my reality.

until apple makes an ipad that runs osX it WILL NOT replace a laptop or tablet that runs a full operating system. apple will do this in a year or 2 and it will be "revolutionary" and "amazing" and all the rest of the lofty rhetoric that adorns their keynotes.

Great argument! It does apply to him, as much as it applies to yourself and me.

But we are observing how you are going the extra mile by loyaly putting much time and energy for Apple probably even without a pay. (Though they care little about you as you say)

Not entirely true. I'm an Apple stockholder. So if Apple does well that means $$$ for me. In about a month I'll be getting another nice dividend $$$ from Apple. LOL.

As far as Apple haters? If Apple burns to the ground they get nothing for their pain and suffering. LOL.

Not @wdfly in "posting about Apple products on Macrumors" shocker!

I'm not looking to buy any iPad at all, but I'm reading threads about Pro vs Air etc. because I find Apple interesting, I am willing to be persuaded I need an iPad in my life again and I like to be on top of all nerdy news. I'm happy to hear about your stocks though, will you buy an iPad when you get your dividend?

Deciding between the 12.9 or 9.7 Pro.

It is an example how to touchpad cursor works, which everyone can try for itself. Same behavior in Pages. And now? Hopefully no more trash answers from you.
But can't you just tap on the new spot on page 1? Why do you have to move the cursor 30 pages when all you have to do to move it is tap a new spot? Or am I misunderstanding you?
[doublepost=1459283767][/doublepost]
And you clearly have lot of evidences about those ridiculous accusations, right?
Sarcasm, my friend

To me, 'Pro' means more powerful so that you can do heavy computation on it like editing video or running a simulation. A kind of task that earn you money. A tool for work. You will be willing to pay more so that you finish more tasks and earn more money in the same amount of time.

The iPad allows me to do every single part of my job (that earns me money).

I feel you. I also want apple to make as much money as they can.
