I finally got around to trying these out a couple weeks ago. First I tried the one he uses here I couldn't find a place for the surface mount to work in my car (it doesn't mount 90 from the front of the phone like the old ones). I don't like suction cup mounts, so I didn't even bother trying that one.
So I returned this unit and got the vent mount on instead. I have it mounted to the vent in the center of my dash with the phone in landscape the way I like it.
Rather than stick the plates to my phone, or the case, I bought the speck presidio mount case that is made for use with these mounts and has the metal plates built into the case.

So far I am really liking this combination, I just wish the case wasn't as slick as it feels. I'm hoping it eventually will lose the slickness like my Incipio case did. Otherwise I might end up going back to my Incipio case with the plates installed inside.
As the reviewer stated the Scosche kit comes with 2 different options. One of them is a larger plastic plate that must have metal embedded in the ends. That one is supposed to mount directly to the back of the phone. The other is the two separate metal plates that stick to your case. The Scosche directions do indeed tell you to put them on the outside of the case, though most people (myself included) decide to put them on the inside so they don't look so ugly. Doing this does weaken the magnetic connection so depending on the thickness of your case it may not work at all. If I decide to go this route with my Incipio case I will most likely attach the metal plates to the hard portion of the case, and then cut out the silicone portion around them so there aren't any bulges.
