Right. So, in other words, I said it looks like a Mac mini, and you decided you needed to reach across the internet and point out that I am wrong, because, actually, it doesn’t look like a Mac mini but, instead, it looks like a Mac mini.Um, when you say 'mac mini' I think anyone would envision you're not talking about a design that was discontunued more than a decade ago.
eg: if you said 'that car looks like a corvette', would I think you're talking about a current day corcette or a 1969 model?
If you were referring to the '69 model you would point that out in your comparison
I got the first one by studying the drop times for Newegg Canada. I logged in at the drop time one night and managed to get one.Or he has a bot LOL
I don't have that problem whatsoever with my 570 Puck. The fan ramps up very rarely when my computer goes to sleep. Otherwise my Mini is the loudest machine in the system.Save your money. When the GPUs in these things get stressed the fan ramps up like a vacuum cleaner. Unless you're wearing closed headphones, it's a hard pass. I had an earlier model and returned it. I later got a Black Magic RX 580 eGPU for a reasonable price on the used market, which is very silent under load. At this point, however, you should probably just wait for Apple's high-end Macs, unless you absolutely need an eGPU for your Intel Mac and this is the only option.
I don't blame you at all. It will be interesting to see if the M1 will support eGPUs sometime in the future.Only interested if/when available for use with Apple Silicon Macs. I am done with Intel.
It doesn't matter. Geekbench scores will be readily available and the Metal and OpenCL benchmarks will tell all you need to know.I'll bet Sonnet won't be posting any benchmarks when the new M1x/M2 Macs come out.
You had one of these? They aren't even out yet.I had one of these and it was a piece of junk so good luck indeed plus OS X did not do this product any favors and I was a huge proponent of using high end GPU’s on Macs. I am done there.
And you reach out across the internets and like all cliche arguments of this sort, can't admit you made an error that left your meaning unclear.Right. So, in other words, I said it looks like a Mac mini, and you decided you needed to reach across the internet and point out that I am wrong, because, actually, it doesn’t look like a Mac mini but, instead, it looks like a Mac mini.

Read the rest of my comment. Your 'standing by your original statement at all costs' stuff is EXACTLY what makes the internet an uncomfortable place.I made no error at all. I didn’t specify “2020 Mac mini.” This kind of **** is what makes the internet such a horrible place. A normal response would be “yep, you’re right, the old mini.” Not “you are wrong. You said Mac mini when the correct answer is the 2012 Mac mini.” What’s next - “the lark is actually nature’s most unhappy bird?”
Not to mention, I’ve been on here since, what, 2008? I have a tremendous number of posts. You think I don’t know about the old mini vs the new mini?
And, by the way, it’s roughly the size of the new mini, too. It’s not like I ever claimed down the mm.
Just say 'yea, I could have been more clear' and end of discussion. Instead you dig in your heels. Just sayin'I made no error at all. Yes, it should. Since the graphics are no longer processed in the laptop enclosure it removes the heat from the internal gpu and routes it externally to the eGPU. Thus lowering the temperature of the processor and lessening the need for fans.the only interesting question would be: Will it quieten the fan of my i9 MacbookPro16?
That might be the only reason to get this thing - but then: its "raison d'être" will
evaporate once an Apple Silicon MBP is out.
should yes - but then I also read:Yes, it should. Since the graphics are no longer processed in the laptop enclosure it removes the heat from the internal gpu and routes it externally to the eGPU. Thus lowering the temperature of the processor and lessening the need for fans.
I have a Sonet Puck RX 570 and it's extremely quiet. My 2018 Mini is farrrr louder than the eGPU.should yes - but then I also read:
A large fan is designed to exhaust heat out through the top of the dock, and it will cycle on and off as needed.
that sounds even worse than the internal fan in the MacbookPro.
No, I had a Sonnet Breakaway Puck, the last gen model. The only difference is the GPU. Good luck.I don't have that problem whatsoever with my 570 Puck. The fan ramps up very rarely when my computer goes to sleep. Otherwise my Mini is the loudest machine in the system.

I'm running a Sonnet Breakaway Puck RX 570 and it increased my Geekbench Metal benchmark from 4623 (without) to 33,795 (with). As a creative professional it was the best money I ever spent.
thanks for the update - a year ago I would have considered that, as my MacBookPro16 is really p.... me off with the fanI have a Sonet Puck RX 570 and it's extremely quiet. My 2018 Mini is farrrr louder than the eGPU.
I just updated to Mac OS Ventura and I'm happy to say the Sonet Puck 570 (RX 5500XT) is running like a champ. Current Geekbench 5 score on Metal is 35,440.
