...I asked in MacRumors forum time ago, and the BIG problem was exposed (because all professionals using this kind of media know):
sd cards are probably the most unreliable storage devices in the long term. They're used for recording data (as photos) and taking the data out of it in a short while. Nobody stores sd cards as back-storage kept in a drawer, and that would be quite convenient related to space!
Choosing the less reliable method is not the best idea for security back-ups.
Of course, there're a lot of interesting alternative uses for sd-cards... but I would keep Time Machine (and other copy) in a safer place (common HDs are better and cheaper)
AND I WOULD INCLUDE SD-CARD IN TIME MACHINE BACK:UP, to avoid the crying at (sure) first sd.card corruption.
Of course, your time machine backup in your desktop NAS could be very handy when you work on the go…

Banana for scale, thank you!

Also $249 for 1TB is just super lame. I could use this for unimportant stuff where speed doesn't matter (iTunes library comes to mind) but beyond that those speeds make this borderline useless.

WOW. $249 for a 1TB SD Card. You can get an external 1TB drive for $49.

Unfortunately it won't fit in my SD slot.

$249 for SD Card, why not just upgrade the internal to 1TB?

I use my as backup in case my SD or Mac dies and I can't get internet access for my could backups. I have a microSD card that can be read by a backup Mac or iPad.

Waiting for the baseQi flush adapter so I can use it with a microSd card. Better than this solution because you can repurpose the microSd if not needed anymore.

They already have one that works in a 14" MBP. I had the BASEQI Aluminum microSD Adapter for MacBook Pro Retina 13" in my 14" MBP.

On Apple Silicon laptops does this drive need to be manually unmounted before putting to sleep in order for the Mac to go to deep sleep or does it handle it better than the Intel models? Currently with my Intel MacBook I need to use Jettison to unmount the SD card at sleep or else my battery drains very fast and my laptop stays warm during what seems like "light sleep."

I’m not sure if Eric remembers that on a MacBook, Time Machine automatically does “Local Snapshots”, which are hidden Time Machine backups that are place in unused disk space, but which don’t show up as taking up space. Do Eric already has a complete, hidden, TM copy of all his files…

The benefit of a NAS over simple HD is remote access, AFAIK. Yes, a backup in a desktop NAS (Network Attached Storage) can do nicely while on the go.
But yes, I suppose the form factor of a memory card is convenient. I would prefer a speedy usb-drive (thumb drive) for travelling (still cheaper & safer, faster) as security resource, though. Not as easy for TimeMachine, I admit.
I'm not the expert: what would you think if a user (or some) that works daily with a lot of cards tells that corruption often happens? I do believe sd-cards users.
(But I still think this product is a nice idea).

Hope you have better luck than I did...

I bought one of those a couple weeks ago to use with my 2012 Macbook Pro. The slot to insert the microSD card was slightly too small for the card and required forcing the microSD card into the adapter. Once the microSD card was inserted into the baseQi adapter, the baseQi was almost too thick to fit into the SD slot on the Macbook. It took a lot of wiggling (and thinking that things were going to break) before it actually went in. Once inside, it was hit and miss on whether the OS would recognize the card.

I returned it the next day.

Well, that costs $400, and you can’t upgrade an existing Mac.
(Edit: sorry, $400 for 1TB to 2TB)

But, yeah, I think the 1TB Jetdrive probably is too much cash to sink on this tech and too much data to commit to slow and not so reliable SD. The $60 256GB one is more affordable.

I think the niche scenario for this type of card is: you’ve bought a 512GB MBP, the drive is nearly full (which will slow it down) so you can stick in a 256GB Jetdrive and move things like photos, music and (compressed) movies to it - stuff that is bulky, but handy to have at your fingertips without having to plug in an external, that tends to be updated infrequently, and doesn’t need high bandwidth to play.

Suitable for time machine?
As a “super undo” facility when you update a file, cuss, and want the old version back almost immediately maybe, or an extra belt-and-braces backup for those times when you can’t connect to your proper external/cloud backup, but SD is not reliable enough for a serious security backup, esp when it is being continuously updated, as with time machine.

Sure. The real value of this is 2 or 3 years down the track, when you discover you've underestimated the amount of soldered in, 400% markup, non-upgradeable, SSD that you've begrudgingly forked out a fortune for. By that time, these things might have doubled in size for the same price, you can put one in, and now you have a hugely increased storage, that is fast enough to play 4K video from in real time, so can throw all your photos, videos, movies, and audio onto it.

Like others have said -- it's too slow. 1TB thumbdrives can do 300 read. 90 is slower than spinning rust (HDD).
And the cost! What were they thinking?

The problem with using a banana for scale is that some of us have bigger bananas than others.

recession is coming.

An external drive doesn't hide itself neatly in the SD card slot out of the way for when you want to take your laptop with you. It's the closest you can get to an internal upgrade after buying a new macbook pro.

I prefer the BaseQi one in my 2015 MBP cause it sits totally flush and is the same color as the computer. You need a flathead screwdriver or a strong fingernail to take it out, but that's a small price to pay for something that looks like part of the laptop and won't get snagged slipping it into a case. Also, it takes a standard microSD card.
