I just read through tomshardware and pcmag and they both talk about camera aperture and all that but none of the simply give me the info I want to know. What camera is on the 16 vs the 16pro? What optical zoom, stabilization, and digital zoom?

I'm sure it will be reviewed just fine.

The usual suspects with have headlines like "the top 10 reasons why you shouldn't upgrade" and a list of things that they want which are still basically incremental changes. Likely many will complain that the Pro max models weigh to paperclips more.

I hope the cameras aren't bugged but I know they are going to be better than my 14 pro which takes great pictures for my purposes.

I hope they don't have overheating and battery issues, which always seem to be a thing after launch. There will certainly be something that needs to be worked out.

If we are being pedantic, I think by definition a ‘zoom lens’ is one that can change its focal length (i.e. ‘zoom’ in and out); while a fixed focal length lens like the 5x is a telephoto lens it isn’t really a zoom lens.
While not a single zoom lens, the combination of the lenses provides stepped optical zoom, as a previous poster mentioned.

True, it's stepped.

In fact, there's no optical zoom at all on iPhones and there's never been. It's just a change of lens, or a crop on a 48 megapixels image to keep the middle 12 megapixels.

So on a 16 Pro, it's like you have a 0.5x, 1x, 2x and 5x optical zoom.
But it's not a zoom lens in a physical sense, it's three lenses that provide a virtual zoom lens.

What you need to know:

iPhone 16:
48mpx Main camera with OIS and a 2x 12mpx lossless digital zoom
12mpx 0.5x wide angle lens with autofocus and OIS. Capable of better Macro shooting.

iPhone 16 Pro:
48mpx camera with better OIS than 16
12mpx 5x zoom lens with OIS
48mpx 0.5x wide angle with OIS and macro

The only real difference that anybody will notice is the extra 3x of zoom for $200. I’d say save your money and get the regular 16.

You're not being pedantic at all. Telephoto and zoom are different things. The market is awash in wide-angle zoom lenses which are, by definition, not telephoto.
