This can be important. What happens if you zoom one of these phones to 4x? Do you get a clear center image in a pixelated frame? Will it just not allow that setting?
It is allowed.

You'll most likely have a 3 megapixels shot with the Wide Angle lens.

I just read through tomshardware and pcmag and they both talk about camera aperture and all that but none of the simply give me the info I want to know. What camera is on the 16 vs the 16pro? What optical zoom, stabilization, and digital zoom?
All you gotta do is go to the tech specs page on Apple’s own website to get the deets on the zoom capabilities.

Is that not common knowledge?🤷🏻‍♂️

Who ever is writing these specs needs to understand photography, cameras, and the difference between zoom and telephoto. It’s a 5x telephoto. If it were an optical zoom, there would be no drop in the number of pixels.
I believe it’s natural to see the array of different lenses as one camera, so most people will see this as a zoom. In theory, you’re right, but not in practice.

So they can talk about dimensions, cpus, sensors, aperture, f-stops, everything but can't mention the optical zooms?
Apple has actually pushed back the optical zoom to the iPhone 17 Pro Max Ultra. Pretty sure the reason for this is because they wanted to fit ChatGPT on the 16 Pro but it was too big and the ChatGPT chip took up too much space so they deleted the optical zoom to make room 🤦‍♂️

No offence, but to name 2 „reviews“ and say all are really bad and none have the info you are looking for, that’s quite something.
Maybe look at more than 2 reviews? Because the ones I’ve seen did mention the cameras in detail
Also

It’s not that difficult to get info from non-moving pictures, you know?

If we are being pedantic, I think by definition a ‘zoom lens’ is one that can change its focal length (i.e. ‘zoom’ in and out); while a fixed focal length lens like the 5x is a telephoto lens it isn’t really a zoom lens.
Traditionally, a zoom lens has a variable focal length. A lens designed to magnify objects that are far away (relative to "normal," which means "similar magnification to a 50mm lens on a 35mm film camera") is called a telephoto lens.

The word "zoom" still applies here, though, as the effect on the camera system is the ability to slide from wide angle to telephoto with stops in between filled in digitally.

Top image quality is going to occur at the natural focal length of each lens assembly, so the "top zoom" of the system would be the focal length of the longest telephoto lens.

This actual influencer review was very good.

Learned a lot about the 16 Pro line for photo & video!

Thanks for the link. That guy has been a staff reviewer for many years on quality sites (dpreview, PetaPixel) that provide solid information on cameras & video tools for pros and amateurs. I think calling him an influencer is selling him short, though.

worth watching this review about photos and videos, it compares the 16Pro, the Samsung and Pixel
The 16Pro is the worst overall for photos (again !) and best for video

.
Saw this.

Extremely disappointing AGAIN, no surprise Pixel and Galaxy banging it out the park for photos.

I found the sound on 16 Pro videos to sound awful compared to galaxy but then I never record anything really so photos is all I care about.

What a flop

Last according to who? I watched the video and thought that the Samsung looked like garbage in the majority of the photos. The pixel had some really nice shots but overall I preferred the iPhone. The only exception being on the 5x and the selfie cam which admittedly I don’t use very much so maybe if those are important to people I can see how they may view the review differently.

We can at least agree that the iPhone is still quite a bit ahead in the video department.
