Movies and episodes can be streamed, or downloaded to a device, and specifically to a Mac. Purchased Movies download as an M4V file. Streamed Episodes/movies download as a MOVPKG package that's called an "HLS Media" file (tho in reality its 1000s of sub-files).
If I download a show, then later I cancel my ATV+ subscription, will I be able to re-watch the show from the file local on my computer? Let's assume I backed it up so ATV+ didn't automatically remove it when I opened the app (does that even happen?).
