I use a manual steamer. Multi level, 18/10 SS. Good stuff. Love par-steaming veg in it, especially root vegetables. I sometimes coat them in olive oil and roast them for a bit. Very delish and naturally sweet! We don't eat rice much, so I've always made it the traditional way, but I'm well aware of Zojirushi's quality and might look into getting one. I've heard of people making porridge in them or even steamed puddings in the UK. Will have to take a look at them online or in person. We bought a few of their boilers for our employees. Very good "kettles," incredibly accurate and easy to clean. Love, Love, Love their thermal mugs, too. Ever since the quality American brands went to the dumpster, I've switched over to their product. Phenomenal is the only word to describe this company.

So, another vote for Zojirushi? Hm.

Must look into this.

What model is this?

Glad it worked out very well for you.

Not fancy, but it's doing the job. Used a little bit more yesterday, it's definitely a good purchase. Today I will try to steam turkey.
[doublepost=1485444516][/doublepost]ok... I had a weird idea.
How about hot towels? Has anyone tried to put a towel in a steamer? In the morning it would be a great feeling.

I have done it! This morning, 5:15 AM, newspapers on my iPP, coffee poured... and two steamed, hot towels! One for me and one for my wife. It felt like waking up at a Spa.

Im wanting to buy a Zojirushi rice cooker. Can the larger capacity machines handle cooking just one/two cups of rice when thats all that is required? I will mostly be cooking for two, but the larger machine may be useful occasionally.

Good question, I suspect you'd need to at least cover the bottom of the cooker, so it may depend on just how wide it is.

There's a minimum fill line or there is on ours. Personally, I wouldn't risk damaging the machine over time by cooking small batches. It would be more economical to buy a small machine now, and then look into buying a bigger one IF you need it.

With the innard being nonstick, I still like to get some olive oil, pour a bit in and use my hand to slather a thin layer all around. It's a habit I picked up when I was younger because nonstick pans, at least then, didn't quite work right when it came to starchy foods. They'll often leave a film of starch that require you to rewash the pot 3-4 times before it's gone.

are there any machines that can cook basmati?
(basmati rice is the only rice I can cook with any consistency, but it's mildly tedious.)

The Zojirushi 5 cup model only costs a few £ more than the 3 cup model, and it also bakes cakes and has a steamer function. For the price difference Id go with the 5 cup model, but on the occasions when i'm only cooking rice for 1 or 2 people Id like to know if it still performs well?

That is a very good & fair question, and one I would have, as well.

This is because, these days, one tends to cook far more often for two to three people than one would for four or five.
