Eighties pop singer Rick Astley has become the surprise contender for best act ever at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards in Liverpool.

The star, who has never been nominated in the history of the event, is up against U2, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day and Tokio Hotel.

The winner, chosen by fans online, will be unveiled at the show on 6 November.

Astley returned to prominence this year when internet users were "tricked" into watching the video of his biggest hit.
BBC.

That would be awesome. MTV Awards are a complete sham anyway, at least this would be amusing :D

Voting for Rick Astley

So, some of you, like myself, may hate MTV. Hell, a lot of you probably hate Rick Astley, too. I personally like him, but as much as I hate/like him, this is too funny to pass up. MTV has him down as an option for their "Best Act Ever" award. Members of the website 4chan (a website I detest...a lot) have set up scripts to vote for him continuously (since you're encouraged to vote more than once). I've voted for him quite a few times, because I think it'd be funny to see him win. If you don't think so, simply disregard this, but I think everyone should vote for him. Although I'm kind of bothered by the fact that artists like Green Day are on there...seriously, we'll vote for Green Day, but we won't vote for David Bowie, who has easily had more impact on the world of acting, concert art, and music in one show than Green Day has in their whole career...but I won't get into that. Point is, vote for Rick Astley. I know you all love Rick Astley enough to do this :p

Cool link. I must confess, I voted 15 times for U2. Rick Astley only had a few hits and then disappeared. U2 is still going strong and is very involved with humanitarian efforts.

Darn the Rickrolling links I've been suckered into so many times...

It could be worse, imagine being Bonorolled...

I've already watched several of their vids on YT several times... I doubt it would have an effect on me. I'm not a fanboy, really - I just think U2 stands out more.

Strictly imo iykwim.

Wait a second best act EVER and the people up for the award are Rick Astley, U2, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day and Tokio Hotel. What a joke, I hope Rick wins after all from that list he is probably the most deserving of that title.

I thought that too. Quite a bizarre and insane mix of acts for a "best act ever" award, but that's MTV for you. As you say, all the more reason for Rick to win :D

Go Ricky, go Ricky...oh wait, wrong Rick  :p

LOL!

I helped with that! Well, not really, I just voted once, I didnt set up any scripts... Still... Its cool how one site can do that.

Gotta love 4chan! :p

I just voted several times for him too.
I never cared for his music, in fact I don't remember any of his music. Except his one hit wonder. I just think it would be so funny for him to win best act ever. Stupid mtv

If any one wants to send me the auto script I' let it run for a few nights:D

You need a Firefox extension called iMacro, not sure if a Mac OS X version is out, though... If not, Parallels or Boot Camp away! :)

I'm deaf, I've never heard a note of Rick (or any other singer). I didn't know he existed until I got rickrolled a few times.

But as someone who is interested in the wider social dimensions of music and its effects on society I do agree that's a crap list of best acts ever. What about people like the Ramones, Beatles, Elvis, Beethoven, Crass, the Clash, Hendrix, any of the Blues legends, etc - people who created or shaped entire new genres of music and social groupings - their influence is still felt decades after these tunes were created. If the award is only for living artists (dunno about that) there's plenty of pioneers still alive.

I'll vote now for Rick as its a nice idea to show up this travesty of an award. But you do realise that multiple voting means the organisers can just pick whoever they want to win the award? (ie. whoever will get them the most advertising revenue.)
