But you do realise that multiple voting means the organisers can just pick whoever they want to win the award? (ie. whoever will get them the most advertising revenue.)

You may sit anywhere in class that you wish ... and here's a couple of Gold Stars for your efforts to date.

Looks like, unlike Rick Astley, the MTV server actually would let you down and run around and desert you. :( It appears to be down, thanks no doubt to you frackers. :p

I love it so much. Go Rick Astley!!!!! Next stop, reality TV.

My guess is the server going down has a lot to do with being overloaded by votes for Rick. With him on the ballot, they really shouldn't even bother adding anyone else.

Here is a web based auto voter. You don't have to install anything. just click on the rick voter, in the upper left.

Many thanks for that - I really didn't want to install any more extensions to FF - I want to keep it nice and stable and not crashing TOO much.

The web-rickvoter is now running. It seems to be casting 1 vote every 2 or 3 seconds which is slower than I thought.

According to the rickvoter site, MTV are receiving 2000 rick votes per sec, which will work out to nearly 6 billion by the end of the contest.

Can I vote for the dude in the Rick video that runs right up the wall and then does a back flip? That and the two ditzy chicks pretending they're hotties are the best parts of that video. But man, that song was EVERYWHERE in 1987. Turn the radio on and it was more likely than not to be playing or would be within a half hour. It's funny. I LOVED that song in '87 and have some ridiculous home videos of lip syncing to the music with goofy sunglasses on, but listening to it now, it doesn't seem any better (or worse really) than any other hit '80s song. But it seemed like it just wouldn't leave the charts back then.

The sad thing is I think his best song was "Cry For Help", which was on the followup album "Free", which was much more soulful sounding and fits his voice better. But then similarly, I think George Michael's best album was "Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1" which has a lot of similar soulful/bluesy music (listen to his "Cowboys and Angels" sometime) instead of trying to push out endless pop hits (which his first solo album did in spades). If you want endless pop, go with Kylie Minogue. At least she's pleasing to the eyes too and has a much sexier singing voice than someone like Britney. ;)

I don't believe it. How can a one-hit wonder be the best act? All you Rick Astley fanboys... :D

And here you all hoot and complain when you get rickrolled... sheesh...

How can a one-hit wonder be the best act?

That's actually not really an accurate representation of his success... he has sold 40 million records, had numerous UK, US and worldwide top 10's (including more than one song making it to the top position). Wikipedia (no, it's not a rickroll) has a summary....

If Americans get criticized for calling Oasis a one hit wonder (because Wonder Wall was the only successful song in the US), the same correction is warranted for Rick....

Mtv never wanted him to win. Mtv used his nomination as a joke. It was to get them free publicity. It did generate a fairly big stir in both Europe and U.S. online and print news authorities.

He won because of the hard work of several individuals who put a web site together. To attract large numbers of both Rick Astley fans. As well as people who were just sick of MTV's commercialized way of doing things. Using auto voters that had to be rewritten, on almost a daily basis. To keep up with mtv's voting service. WE were able to give rick more votes then their are people in all of Europe.

From what I understand MTV only gave him a invitation to the awards. They new he had way more votes than any other contestant. Even knowing this. It was not until the day before the awards. That they decided to ask him to accept. He decided not to even attend the event. I was surprised they even used what air time they did to announce his award. As mtv would rather use every second they have to promote and advertise the more marketable groups and singers. To their targeted demographic groups.
