Rick Hates Rickroll?
Some people may know pop singer Rick Astley from his 1987 hit "Never Gonna Give You Up". Astley, a native to Lancashire, England, was only 21 when his single took off.

The song is the basis for an Internet phenomenon known as "Rickrolling", where a YouTube link to the video is disguised as a link to something else, usually breaking news. As a result, the video has received over 4 million hits as of the end of September 2007. The video has also spawned several popular copy-cat videos, ranging from the inevitable cat macros to "ReichRolls" of images of Hitler to the song.

Now 41 years old, Astley is not amused by the Rickroll phenomenon.

Notable examples of this meme entering the mainstream are Carson Daly's attempts to Rickroll his audience, as well as the rickrolling of 150 people at the Ball State University NRHH conference on September 15, 2007. Also, prior to the release of Radiohead's In Rainbows, the website http://www.radioheadlp7.com claimed to be releasing information pertaining to the album, only to post a Rick Roll at the end of the countdown. Many large music news sources such as the NME, Pitchfork Media, and Rolling Stone fell for the ploy.

Now 41 years old, Astley is not amused by the Rickroll phenomenon. "At first I was flattered, you know?" he said, "but when Family Guy said Never Gonna Give You Up had a 'mediocre, generic sound', I realized they weren't laughing with me."

The former pop-star has released six albums, including a Greatest Hits compilation. Unfortunately, none of his music attained the popularity he enjoyed at the start of his career. "I'm afraid I'm going to be remembered as a mediocre, generic pop star," said Astley.

Astley lives in Surrey with his Danish girlfriend and their daughter.

I'll never give up this thread or let it down or desert it.

The best Rickrolls are the ones where people are linked to the video they asked for, only for it to cut into Rick Astley halfway through.

If I knew what RickRoll'd was, I'd probably have it done right and left. This is either confusing or else I'm just slow on the uptake I don't get how it's related to Astley. Why not Howard Jones?

Is it kind of liked Punk'd? Pwnd? ownd? RocknRolld?
