Dude, seriously, calm down.

Yeah, it's a phone. Yes there's a bug. We're discussing it. Doesn't matter to you?

Cool.

I can see the difference in the pictures. I do photography as hobby and it doesn't bug me - but it is annoying. Another thing I noticed, but forgot about until I read this thread.. photos from your computer synced to your iphone lose quality. When you pinch and zoom them on the phone, it's horrible because all the detail is gone. On the computer, the detail is much better and there is more of it. Something is happening. I just never looked into it really.

I run an iPhone Wallpaper site, and being a designer / artist this has bugged me for some time. Now with 32GB of storage, you would think maybe we could control the compression, toggle it on / off.

We're working on an App Store App of our content that'll allow for uncompressed downloading of the source wallpapers at full quality. So far it seems it can be done. Be on the lookout for our App ;)

What you're saying is that you, like most people, have never tried to pinch and zoom on one of your pictures, only to find absolutely NO detail past the full-screen size? I find that somewhat odd ...

ITS A PHONE PICTURE!!! What the hell you expecting the picture to look like, a DSLR Camera. Who cares if its a little loss of detail!

This thread is making me rage!

Well first of all, it's more than 'a little loss of detail.' Second of all, if this discussion is making you "rage," you ought to look into counseling or something to help with anger management. ;) Finally, some of us sync galleries from iPhoto to our phones, and it's irritating to have a beautiful picture displayed with such an obvious loss of quality and detail. Just because you don't care that synced pictures look like garbage doesn't mean the rest of us are happy.

It would be great if your app also allowed syncing our own pictures from a Mac/PC over wifi. If it allowed user-created content to sync/save in high quality, I'd buy it in a second.

This thread isnt making me "rage", its making me laugh!!! Who the hell has so much time on their hands that they are so worried about how crisp a picture is on their phone that they see for about 2 seconds while unlocking the phone!?! I mean, seriously...this has got to be one of the silliest complaints I have seen yet.
I would say that its fine to just casually notice it if you are into that sort of thing, but to care so much that it needs to be brought up on a forum in its own thread is just laughable! Really....find something else to occupy your time! lol

Yet another thread ruined by the "spend more time worrying about something else this is not a big deal at all" posters.

This is a minor issue to me, I really don't care, but the sheer volume of those types of posts is staggering. Don't you find it rather ironic?

Thanks for your help. It's unfortunate that the lock screen wallpaper isn't the only place where the picture quality is horrible, isn't it? ;)

call it anal or whatever, but there is substantial quality loss to the images downloaded / synced, and for some who own a nice device with a sexy screen like the iPhone, I personally want the best, most crisp, clean wallpaper I could find. I guess it's a matter of opinion, but hey, it's a valid point, and it's a shame users have to go out of their way to get around it.

We're focused on getting the main functionality of our app to our webapp standard, but most importantly, preserving the image quality from our app to your iPhone. We'll add functionality and features based on user feedback, polls and votes for what you'd like to see in future versions, etc.

This is a well-known bug that I have been complaining about (both in feedback to Apple and in the forums) since 2007.

and another, larger sample here.

Apple doesn't seem to care at all about this. The only way I've found to get decent pics on the phone to use as lock screen wallpapers is to jailbreak, install OpenSSH, and transfer the files in that way. Asinine, really.

I think everyone that is complaining need to look at this post again. It's not just backgrounds it's the way the phone handles photos.

the cake looks good in both pictures

The cake does look good(I want a piece), I just don't like that much grain in my cake.

Exactly. It looks like a basketball was dribbled all over a glossy print. It's awful!! Not only is the amount of dithering unnecessary and ugly, the file ends up bloated - MUCH larger than the original.

So not only is the image quality greatly reduced, the file size is greatly increased. Kind of absurd if you ask me.

1. Install any file transfer/view app. ( I like Files Lite)
2. Transfer images over wi-fi.
3. Take screenshot when you get the image the exact way you want it.
4. Use screenshot to get a full resolution wallpaper.
5. Come back on MacRumors and find something else to complain about.

Will that allow me to get decent images in the photos app?

Ok I'm just going to put it down to my crap eyes! I've never noticed it enough for it to be a problem but I guess if you do find it a problem then why not complain about it..

You're not alone. I looked at those two pictures for a good 10 seconds and couldn't see any noticeable difference between them.

It's like some people have better ears than others. My wife always rips music at 320 Kbps because she "hates the poor quality of 256 Kbps." OTOH I am pretty happy with 128 Kbps AAC. :)

Quite honestly, I am glad I am not nearly as picky as some of you when it comes to digital picture quality. That's one fewer things to worry about! :)

There is a way around this: Upload the image you want online somewhere, surf to it via Safari on your iPhone, tap and hold on the image and select 'Save image'.

It will save an uncompressed/non dithered version to your iPhones Camera Roll which you can set as Wallpaper and view without any dithering/compression.

It's a bit of a ballache - but it works.

Hope this helps someone.

Actually... sadly, saving images from Safari also compresses them (they become slightly blurry and jpeg'd). You can use a file browser to upload png files (as long as you include a thumbnail image) and you'll have the full quality photo.

Crap. Your right. The full res versions are actually on the camera roll, they just go through some 'on the fly' compression when being viewed or accessed by certain apps.
