Anyone know why the 1TB SSD upgrade in the iMac is $1000 yet in the MBPro its only $500. Aren't they essentially the exact same component?

It's a matter of how much the 1TB SSD option is over the base configuration. With an iMac, the base configuration is a 1TB HDD, which is much cheaper than a 1TB SSD.. With a MacBook Pro, the base configuration is already an SSD, so it's not as much of a premium to upgrade to a higher capacity SSD.
The base price of the iMac is with a HDD, while the base price of a rMBP is with an SSD.
Obviously the gap between HDD and SSD would be far bigger than the gap between SSD and SSD.
