I'm looking to buy an ipad air, I know they are discontinued now, so I was figuring would now be the best time to get one as they might possibly be at their cheapest? Or should I hold out?
Yeah the retail supply lines are dry even if Best Buy a major buyer wanted more iPad Air 2 Apple can not supply themIpad air 2's are discontinued?

Says who? I bought a brand-new Air 2, two weeks ago from Best Buy. And the build date of the serial number was July 2016.
One thing to consider, Apple sells certified refurbished Air 2s which carry 1 year warranty same as brand new. I've had very good luck with Apple refurbs so that's definitely one route to consider. Stock fluctuates but 64GB Air 2 goes for $419 and 128GB $499.At this very moment, I would say now is not a good time to buy an iPad Air 2. Best Buy is selling the 9.7" iPad Pro for $100 off right now, but isn't currently offering a discount on the iPad Air 2.
That puts the 32GB iPad Pro at only $100 more than the 16GB iPad Air 2, and the same price as the 64GB iPad Air 2.
As far as support and performance, you can expect the iPad Air 2 to perform almost as well and be supported about as long as the iPad Pro, so don't worry about that if you decide to buy one.
Honestly, the A9X might seem super fast right now but I think by the time RAM becomes an actual issue (and not just in a can't keep tabs open in Safari way), the CPU will likely be outdated by then, too. Multitasking is bound to hit both CPU and RAM pretty heavily.I say buy the iPad Air 2. It's still a great device and has 2 gb ram just like the iPad Pro 9.7 so they both will have updates for a few years to come.....they both are not as future proof as the 12.9 iPad Pro due to lack of ram......

I've had an iPad 3, 4 and Air running iOS 9. All have 1GB RAM but the bottleneck for me was definitely CPU/GPU. That's with Reduce Motion enabled and pretty much all the fancy graphic UI enhancements disabled.
I can't get over the fact that this was released over 2 years ago and it's still as great as it is. The iPad 2 was like that, but you had to deal with a low resolution display while the newer iPads had retina displays.I recently purchased a used 128GB cellular Air 2 for $450. This tablet is an absolute beast, and I expect that it will remain so for some time to come. If you can get a solid deal, go for it
