I'm looking to buy an ipad air, I know they are discontinued now, so I was figuring would now be the best time to get one as they might possibly be at their cheapest? Or should I hold out?

There's no danger in buying now, really. If you can hold off, you might as well wait until September to see if the price is reduced further.

Ipad air 2's are discontinued?
Yeah the retail supply lines are dry even if Best Buy a major buyer wanted more iPad Air 2 Apple can not supply them

look for the Air 2 to be discontinued and the iPad Pro 9.7 will take over with a price drop next year but no new model the 9.7 Pro will have an equally long life as the Air 2.

Why ? What's left to update ? Except removing the 3.5mm jack which I do not want

Says who? I bought a brand-new Air 2, two weeks ago from Best Buy. And the build date of the serial number was July 2016.

At this very moment, I would say now is not a good time to buy an iPad Air 2. Best Buy is selling the 9.7" iPad Pro for $100 off right now, but isn't currently offering a discount on the iPad Air 2.

That puts the 32GB iPad Pro at only $100 more than the 16GB iPad Air 2, and the same price as the 64GB iPad Air 2.

As far as support and performance, you can expect the iPad Air 2 to perform almost as well and be supported about as long as the iPad Pro, so don't worry about that if you decide to buy one.

One thing to consider, Apple sells certified refurbished Air 2s which carry 1 year warranty same as brand new. I've had very good luck with Apple refurbs so that's definitely one route to consider. Stock fluctuates but 64GB Air 2 goes for $419 and 128GB $499.

I say buy the iPad Air 2. It's still a great device and has 2 gb ram just like the iPad Pro 9.7 so they both will have updates for a few years to come.....they both are not as future proof as the 12.9 iPad Pro due to lack of ram......

Honestly, the A9X might seem super fast right now but I think by the time RAM becomes an actual issue (and not just in a can't keep tabs open in Safari way), the CPU will likely be outdated by then, too. Multitasking is bound to hit both CPU and RAM pretty heavily.

I've had an iPad 3, 4 and Air running iOS 9. All have 1GB RAM but the bottleneck for me was definitely CPU/GPU. That's with Reduce Motion enabled and pretty much all the fancy graphic UI enhancements disabled.

The iPad Air 2 is absolutely amazing, still.

If you don't need the pencil, the Air 2 for a discounted price offers a lot more bang for the buck than the Pro 9.7". I think it's a better purchase. All in my opinion of course.

In its current state the A9X is not even using half of the power it's capable of...so that will definitely be a few years to come once it's reaches its limitations....even the A9 is still overpowered...iOS bugs are the real issue now....

I recently purchased a used 128GB cellular Air 2 for $450. This tablet is an absolute beast, and I expect that it will remain so for some time to come. If you can get a solid deal, go for it :)

I can't get over the fact that this was released over 2 years ago and it's still as great as it is. The iPad 2 was like that, but you had to deal with a low resolution display while the newer iPads had retina displays.

Indeed. Got my iPad Air 2 64GB LTE earlier this year, and cannot believe how fantastic this thing is, I doubt I'll be upgrading anytime soon, not for at least 18months.
