Just manually manage stuff on itunes and drag the ring tones you have to the iPhone. Understand?

so.... import ring tone in iTunes, then drag to iPhone, how do i ensure they are going in the ring tone directory/folder ?

I don't have iTunes here at work, so maybe someone can step you through the process, or I'll respond tonight. When you click on the iPhone in iTunes, what do you see under it?

thanks dude, i will let you know what i says under my iPhone in iTunes later, first got to get some lunch :}

okay, i see the iPhone and:
  • Music
  • Movies
  • Ringtones
but when i choose sync ringtones it says it will delete all music (which it did one time :} now how do i get my own -not in iTunes- ringtones on the device ?

this time i was able to copy and see it on the iPhone.... fact remains that was ringtone i made in Itunes, all the other ones are .mp3's not in iTunes, do i have to import those and convert ? m4r is seen as a ringtone, how about a message tone ? the one i imported is not in the text message sound menu.

Yes, you have to convert the mp3 to a ringtone. See this:

You can also go to this thread, which repeats this info:

As far as message tones go, IDK, since I don't use messaging. I recall something about that on this site, but you might try searching.

I hope you understood that you were not to do a sync, but to do a drag and drop. You should always have iTunes set to manual, not auto syncing, BTW.

yes, i did drag 'n' drop :} i have ringtones checked off but other items i have on auto sync, not good ? why ?

Because it is better (IMO) to have control over what happens to your iPhone.

So, everything works for you now?

only thing I can't get to work is text message tones if that's even possible to change.

tks.

It's giving you that error because somewhere along the line your iPhone was plugged into another customer and synced....so now you have to erase everything with what is on this computer.

Nope, it's not possible unless you jailbreak your phone from the search that I did.

will check it out... tks. (yes, i have jail broken my iPhone)

it's brand new... so i doubt it.

Wrong. You obviously have never synced ringtones b4.

thanks..

Ringtones Sync

Simple solution: In itunes with Iphone connected go to- summary tab- and select-Manually sync Music and Videos-then go to -Ringtones and --drag your selected ringtone or music to the Iphone (under devices) manually. It works!

Also there is a free application -Ringtone Recorder- this app will record your fav 30 seconds of whatever, and then emails it to you. You then drag it to the desktop then to Itunes (Ringtones). But once again you must set Summary Tab to Manually ! :apple:

Weird, I have full control on what gets put on my iPhone as well, and mine Auto-syncs. I don't find a need to manually manage anything. :)

I also sync my Ringtones (those I created through Garageband) with no issues either.
