voice mail is picking up too quickly, before I can answer phone.

It is the same amount of time as a regular time that the phone waits before sending on to Voice Mail. Are you sure you aren't hitting the sleep button? If it isn't long enough, try calling your carrier's support number and see if they can adjust that timing for you.
