So back when I had a simple flip phone one of the features you could do was... set a custom ringtone for an individual and also set a ringtone for all in your contacts that don't get that custom individual tone and then finally you can set a tone to anyone who is NOT IN YOUR CONTACTS.... So I have a bunch of custom tones for friends and family and then EVERYONE else gets the tone I set for my ring... But i want a tone for those not in my contacts so I know they are not. Flip phone did it.. Iphone does not, as far as i know.

Set the ringtone for contacts, and then set a default ringtone, which will be for anyone not in your contact list.
If I understand you... that would require setting a ringtone for all of my contacts individually... That's a lot of contacts.

Once you create your contacts group, you can give the entire group a specific ringtone, without having to go through each contact. Then set whatever ringtone you want for any call not in your special group.
I've never heard of adding a ringtone to a group under iOS before, and everything I'm finding through a search indicates the only way is to add them to each individual contact. I'm not seeing any options for groups aside from naming them when they're first created on my iPhone, either.

This would be pretty cool to set up whenever I get around to putting custom tones back on my phone.

You can also create groups by logging into iCloud. Very easy to do.

Edited to add: I got ahead of myself with the contacts question. I was wrong about the ringtone for groups. I thought i had done it that way on my phone, but I just saw that I had done it individually. Sorry, OP.
