GarageBand + iToner seems to be the perfect combo right now.

    yea pretty crappy selection atm...

I hope someone finds a easy workaround because the renaming bs doesn't work for me... ( maybe because my ringtone file is 10mb? )

Yup... cool. (super easy to trim songs, add fades, etc...)

Does anyone know how to assign a ringtone to the text message alert without Jailbreak?

If you take the plunge and you're not scared, use install app. I have no idea why some people are so reluctant to mod their iPhones, this little box is just begging for more functionality! Some of the apps you can dl there are really starting to mature. There is an app called SendSong that allows you to use any song in your ipod as a ringtone. You can also use it to send any song to an email address. Of course all....Free!
