Course you can!!! You can take your existing songs in itunes and cut them down as per the below:

1. Click on iTunes – Library
2. Click the song you’d like to edit
3. Locate the start and end times of the selection you want. To do this, move the iTunes playback head (at the top of iTunes) to the start of the selection and note the start time. Then move the playback head to the end of the selection and note the end (stop) time.
4. Click on the Song File – Get Info – Options
5. Click on Start Time and enter the start time you noted
6. Click on Stop Time and enter the end time you noted
7. Click on OK
8. Click on iTunes – Edit - Preferences – Importing
9. In Import Using, click on AAC Encoder
10. Click on OK
11. Right Click on the Track thats been added – Convert Selection to AAC
12. Right click the new AAC track and choose to find in on your computer
13. Rename the new AAC track as a .m4r
14. Double click the new .m4r which will open up into the ringtones section of iTunes
15. Sync new ringtone to iphone

Bottom Line, this is THE best way

Thank You.

I can not thank you enough. That was what I needed, I'm so tired of the iPhone ringtones, nor do I want to pay for them either

Another great site for ringtones, iphone or otherwise is myxertones. They have a huge variety of ringtones from hardcore punk to Disney Parks music they cover it all!

the best part about audiko.net is that any ringtones you make go on their servers to be shared with everyone else. i only wish it would show who made them so you could get a little credit for your cleverness ;)

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here but I followed the instructions posted to convert my selected songs to .m4r files. iTunes is displaying them as Kind: "Ringtones" but they're not going into the Ringtones area of my Library on the left pane in iTunes. How do I get all of the .m4r files to show up under "Ringtones" so that they can be synced with my iphone?

Is there a limit on how many ringtones you can have?
Not as far as I can tell. :)

The great thing about myxer.com is that they have them already formatted for the iPhone, so you can download them directly into iTunes in the m4r format.

Are they under 30 seconds long? That can be the dealbreaker if they're too long.

There are 3 of them that are over 30 seconds (none over 38). I have 24 total but like I said, they aren't showing up under ringtones. I've checked each of them and they are all .m4r files so I can't figure out what the problem is.

Guys just use Audiko. It saves you 13 steps.
& I'm pretty sure it works worldwide.

You're probably right about that but since I already went through the trouble of creating all 24 ringtones via itunes, I'd like to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

This link cropped up yesterday, and it's literally amazing!

http://audiko.net/en.html

Just upload your choosen song in .Mp3, cut,
and download in .M4r format for iPhone!

I take no credit in finding this, someone posted it yesterday.

Thanks for reposting this - works awesome for ring tones and alarm sounds. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to use custom SMS/text sounds? Thanks

Sorry for bumping this but I could really use some help. Anyone?

I fixed this problem by right clicking the song and choosing Show in Windows Explorer, then Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types' and make sure it ends in .m4r
when I double clicked it this time it opened up in Ringtones.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm on a Mac. I still can't figure this out. Anyone?

Are you kidding me?

Upload your song, or just search if they have your song already, and a few ringtones might be made for it already. But if you want your own, just upload the song, crop it, then download it, and then put it in iTunes and sync your iPhone.....

i use audacity to create my ringtones from MP3 files, seems to work great, a little more professional if you know how to use audacity (much like any other audio editing app)

I created an Automator action that converts files from mp3 to m4a and then rename them to m4r and import to itunes :)
