Any answer to this? I really don't want to install Winterboard, although it is cool in the beginning, I really rather save the memory to not bog down my system (even if it's minute) to have the ability to have custom ringtones.

I primarily use Winterboard to apply my ringtones and my own created themes. I've never noticed any slowness, nor does it hog memory. 🙂

However, this may help:

you dont need winterboard for ringtones or message tones....

there are a few free programs that will let you create your own ringtones.

Just search......MP3 to M4R in google, you will find about a ton of programs.

There are ringtone packs you can download too...i cant remember where i saw it last.

I just SSH them into my phone..

theres a guide to make custom ringtons somewhere on macrumors, i dont know where it is anymore though, maybe a search will find it

I've never used ringtones through Winterboard...

I generally make them for iTunes in Garageband or I dl them in Cydia and they just show up and I never have to install winterboard.

Me too (Garageband that is), but I sometimes refer to SMS tones, etc as "Ringtones" too. I assumed this is what the OP was looking for, hopefully I assumed correctly 🙂
