Wrestler kills family, gets 3 hour televised tribute

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/more/06/25/wrestler.dead.ap/index.html?cnn=yes

This story is sad in so many ways, none of which compares to the fact that he will receive a three hour tribute to be televised this weekend.

does anyone else here find this a bit disturbing?

Perhaps a more appropriate response would have been to air a three hour program on the pitfalls of steroid use...

I'm pretty sure the tribute has been pulled. It originally aired yesterday, before all the details had come out. It was rebroadcast on the west coast after it was known to be a murder-suicide, which was creepy, obviously.

hiegnsites 20/20, nothing more nothing less.

Yesterday when the WWE received words that one of it's stars was dead they decided to cancel the regular show and run a tribute, same as they did with Owen Hart and Eddie Guerrero. This isn't a case of the WWE running a tribute to a murderer, this is an example of them running a tribute to a dead coworker.

Put yourself in there shoes for a second, lets say tomorrow afternoon you get a call that your boss has died. Are you going to continue working away for the day? Or are you going to drop everything and start mourning? This is no different, the WWE just happens to have a TV show to air, so they went with their gut, which although looks like a bad choice now, it was the right choice at the time.

Although you may wanna take their timeline with a grain of salt (they are trying to cover their @$$es here), the WWE timeline is worth a read before passing judgment.

Really shocking, but without prejudging I would speculate that drugs or steroids have to be involved somehow. Men don't just decide to murder their wife and child for no reason.

You wouldn't want my honest answer.

On a serious note, this is a very sad and disturbing story.

At this junction, I don't know what to feel. I have watched Benoit since 1999, when I got back into wrestling, it was WCW Monday Nitro. I always enjoyed seeing him, Malenko, Flair and Anderson in the Four Horsemen; then later himself and Malenko with Perry Saturn, "The Franchise" Shane Douglas and Aysa in Revolution.

Aspiring to be a wrestler myself, he was one person I've always wanted to meet, wrestle; get the **** knocked out of me and learn from; after I got the **** kicked out of me. Now, that isn't going to happen and I have one regret in my life, but I'll get over it.

I have a lot of admiration and respect for Chris Benoit, THE WRESTLER. He has always inspired me to work hard and be passionate about what you do. Give 100% and nothing less. This murder, his wife and son, it doesn't sound like Chris. Everything I've read, and heard, is totally the opposite of what is being portrayed in the media, which you should take with a grain of salt, and from the police.

To quote Bret Hart, one of my other favorites, I want to get to the bottom of this and move on like everyone else, but I'm waiting for the real facts until I pass judgment and draw a conclusion.

Until then, I'm confused and lost, but even more passionate to get into wrestling.

Why don't you take Chris Benoit's interviews and everything you "learned" about him with a grain of salt. ;)

Even if I wait for all the facts to come in, including possible "reasons" for doing what he did, I don't think it was excusable. The only reason to wait would be if there was a chance he didn't kill himself or his family, which is doubtful right now.

Indeed. It does look like an open and shut case.

I actually saw a bit of the tribute show that was originally broadcast – it was very, very creepy to see the talking heads with his fellow wrestlers discussing how much he loved his wife and son, and what a devoted family man he was. Chilling stuff. :(

I am not trying to excuse what he did -- I had never heard of him until now -- or say that this makes up for it, but if it was anabolic steroids he was taking, then I am sure he wasn't acting "himself." A side effect of steroids is psychosis. Obviously, though, he was having family problems as his wife cited physical abuse in the divorce documents.

The story is a tragic one, but more about the dehabilitating effects of steroid use and how many lives it destroys, rather than one of cold-blooded murder.

I still can't believe what he did.

A buddy and I met him and got his autograph. I shook his hand and he looks like a crazy son of a bitch.

This was when he broke his neck wrestling Kurt Angle and he was out for a while.

I still have his autograph.

Why is the question we all must ask..With all this success, I actually enjoyed him wrestling. He didn't need to do this. He was mentally unstable, we all know that now, but he always had a shady personality.

Funny but off topic-I used to do the Crippler Crossface to my friend and he sure as hell didn't like it. (We did it to another friend and he pissed his pants, no joke, this was a while back I can assure you)

It's the question many of us are asking, but we may never know. To me, this doesn't seem like Chris Benoit, it's a different person who did this.

We have to wait for the real facts.

it's pretty sad...as a montrealer, I remember going to the shows and seeing him perform...he will be missed...but not by his recent actions...
