and just a lower standard of living. A one bedroom flat over there cost like $3000 US a month and the buildings were made in like 1750 BC. :D

That's because your public transport sucks. Hell, our public transport sucks and I think yours is bad.

There are regions of my country still not properly charted, it's possible down here to drive the equivalent of New York to New Orleans and not cross a single paved road and yet it's still easier for me to get around on public transport than it is in the US. And I don't like our public transport one little bit but it's still better than yours.

A minivan (or a people carrier) would be far better than a SUV. Enjoy your high fuel bills and the illusion of safety that you get.

I just looked at the Escalade's web page. That's one ugly vehicle. Its aerodynamics look as streamlined as those of a house brick.

Public Transport sucks everywhere. I'm not defending ours. But you see we don't need it in the Good ole USA. We have our big honking trucks and SUVS to get us anywhere we need to go, in style and without some bloke sneezing on us. Enjoy yours though. I'll cruise with my leather and DVD system. YEAH!

To any Americans who wonder why the world seems to have such a low opinion of them, it is because the above is the general perception of the American mentality.

I know it's incredibly unfair, but its true.

Did you know that a bus has on average 200 times the emissions of a normal car? Also, buses have to keep on stopping and starting. Does that sound nice and efficient to you? :p

I don't know where this perception that public transport in the UK is actually any good. I commute into London and back every day and can vouch for the fact that its overpriced and unreliable quite a lot of the time.

Outside of major cities, the public transport system might as well not exist. Buses are invariably late or cancelled for no reason whatsoever, train lines are underserviced, and have rolling stock from the 70s still in place!

Even in London we have the creaking, boiling, overcrowded Tube system, based on electrics and power supplies that pre-date the Second World War - hence the intermitent breakdowns!

And don't even get me started on those damn bendy buses! :rolleyes:

Incidentally, the public transportation systems in both Vienna (that's in Austria, not Wisconsin) and Stockholm (that's in Sweden, not Texas) are fantastic. Whenever I go on holiday (vacation) and get back to London (that's the capital of the UK), I almost immediately get stressed out. Public transport in the UK is dirty, slow, unreliable and far too expensive.

I'm not surprised that public transport in the US is crap. Think of how few passengers they could fit in each bus or train. It'd cost a fortune for a proper system.

Enjoy life on the top. All empires fail eventually. Just ask us Brits, the Romans, the Spanish, the Mexica, etc, etc, etc.

The bendy-buses are a god send for people like me who don't want to pay the fare :D .

Although I'd still rather have the Routemaster. Just for nostaligia. This is what a bus should really look like:

Perhaps I'm the only person who thinks Londons public transport system is quite good?! The tube is incredibly quick (when it's working) and, unless you live in certain black spots, it's range is incredible. Unless you live on the Northern Line, most of the time you will have a positive experience.

OK, maybe my impression of it is skewed by the fact that I rarely travel rush hour. In fact, when I travel, I often get a whole carriage to myself :)

If you live outside the UK (like me for example) you can go to the airport and clame the VAT (tax) back before you leave the country.

You should try living here. It's not just a perception. :p

I've been an outsider ever since I stepped off the ship and I still don't understand how to be American. I understand that the country is huge. I've driven across it but I don't see how, with the great t.v. coverage, people can ignore the rest of the world. Still, I knew people who hadn't traveled 3 miles to cross a state line.

The U.S.A. is a great country but it's definitely no better or worse than any other free country--it's just different.
