Pardon me if this has already been answered. But has anyone tried the MaxUpgrade SSD+HDD kit? I am rather curious.

Yes. It works absolutely fine.
My current config: Samsung 840 Pro 512GB + 250GB 2.5" HDD
Waiting for the Crucial M500 960GB. ;)

Where does the SSD recieve power from in the maxupgrades kit?

I think you use a Y power adapter at the stock power cable that goes to the stock HDD. Then the one cable from the Y adapter goes to the HDD and the other to the SSD... So both SSD and HDD from one power cable...

Thats correct.

What exactly do you get with maxupgrades SSD blade adapter? I mean what's in the box?

This thread need distillation

It would be very useful if someone would distill all the information gleaned from the successful modifications on this thread and post them in a new thread.

One question to add. It seems everyone has been switching their stock 1TB HDD for SSD. Has anyone tried upgrading their 1TB HDD for a 3TB HDD? Would like to hear if there were any fan issues and if so how they can be avoided or resolved.

I've got maxupgrades single ssd kit, 27in iMac late 2012 and 840 Pro 256GB.
When use with my stock 1TB drive, my imac will freeze waking up from sleep.

I thought the power Y connector is not getting enough power for the stock 3.5in 1TB WD Blue.
So I changed it to a 2.5in WD Black 750GB/7200RPM.

It worked for couple hours but now it freezes from waking up again.

I tried to disable disk sleep, hibernate mode but it doesnt solve the issue at all. now my work around is disabled machine sleep all together.

Just wondering if there's anyone having similar issues.

maxupgrades ssd kit is a really nice idea, but in the long run it should damage the mainboard...

Dont try this at home ;-)

I got the same question, how could it do any damage?

His information is completely false. The Maxupgrades kit, or the kit going to be offered by Micro SATA Cables in the near future (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1602596/) will have no long term repercussions to the logic board or any of the other internal components.

I'm not entirely sure how he came to his conclusion, but you've nothing to worry about. Rip the sucker open and throw in some drives. :)

Just bought the new iMac! :) I was convinced it was a good idea to go with the base 21" model after reading this thread. The base will do for the coming year and after that I can upgrade the CPU, RAM and HDD.

What CPU's can I use?

Hi, I have open my iMac late 2012 and I added a "blade" ssd 256GB.
I wanted to replace the original 3.5 hard drive 1TB with a bigger one.
I purchased a WD30EFRX but the fan increases to 1500rpm (instead of the usual 1200rpm).
I tried another hard drive WD20EARX but the fan increases to 1800rpm.
without any 3.5 hard drives running at 1200rpm.

you have replaced the 3.5 hard drive with a bigger one?
thanks

im having sort of similar problem with a bit different configuration
i have a stock imac 27 MD096LL
bought it very cheap with broken lcd
replaced it but decided since its open why not add ssd before sealing it
i also wanted to keep 1tb for a junkyard
so i bought maxupgrade kit
now my fan runs noticeably faster( and louder just like oligominerale)
i decide to investigated further
i ran apple hardware test and as i suspected it gave me hard drive temperature sensor error
it looks like this 4SNS/1/40000000: THOO 9.00
4sns means trouble with sensor T means temperature and H meant hard drive(at least according to google)
and im guessing nine as the value that says that something is wrong
now who here used maxupgrade kit and had same issue?
i need a solution here
ps . i have unplugged the ssd (kept just the hard drive plugged thru maxupgrade cables kit) same issue
unpluged maxupgrade cables(so everything like it was in the beginning) -everything is fine!
also the ssd alone on stock cata cable has no issue
so it must be the kit
somehow it reads wrong temperature or does not reads it at all?
i dont really know
need help_

A couple of noob questions. So can I have both an SSD and a fusion drive in my 2012 iMac? And if so, do I need to get one of those maxupgrade kits to do it?

Do NOT get the maxupgrade kit. There are currently problems with it. They have not responded to my emails either, regarding these problems. Their customer support is terrible.

i concur DO not buy The maxupgrade ssd kit if you plan using stock 3.5 hard drive along with ssd
it works fine with dual ssd
and it works fine (s0 far) with ssd and 2.5 hard drive
the nature of this problem is that the internal circuitry is seeing a higher power draw and kicking in the fans for more cooling
the solution is easy
ether use 2,5 hard drive as the are less powercunsuptious
or use it with two ssd
it works ok like that
at least mine is working fine (so far)

change the y power connector ends
the main must go to ssd(where your system is)
the extension connect to 2.5 hd
had same issue
its solved now

Has anyone attempted a SSD upgrade on a late 2013 27" iMac? My 2010 27" was damaged by Apple when they were replacing a defective screen and AppleCare is replacing it with a entry level 27" model so it only has a 1tb hdd. I would like to add my Samsung 830 SSD if possible and keep the hdd for data.
