Not sure if this is the right place but what the hell....

Can you use handbrake, mac the ripper of whatever to rip just the voice channel from a 5:1 DVD? I wanted some audio of an actor talking but not the background music and wondered if it was possible to have total separation of the voice. If not, does Final Cut Express allow you to tinker with sound levels to remove unwanted music?

    Thanks!

You can't rip a single channel using MacTheKnife.

You can, however, use Cinematize to separate the channels and convert them into individual AIF files, which you can then bring into FCE or FCP (or any other program that edits audio files). Just make sure that you choose "Decode all Channels" in the audio tab and "Separate Stream Files" in the Output tab

This will only work if the source DVD is unprotected, btw

Now the real question is whether or not any of those six channels will be voice only. If it isn't, there's not a whole heck of a lot you can do. You can play with EQ settings and try to get rid of as much unwanted music as you can, but since a lot of the harmonics in music (especially strings) are the same as the human voice...it's a bit of a losing battle.

You may need to use MacTheRipper to rip the disc to your hard drive first, btw.
