Yet they gave it a 3.5 out of 5. Hahaha, sounds like crap to me!

Well I wouldn't exactly says its a rival of the Apple TV it doesn't have a hard drive, or 802.11n.

Exactly my point. That review is ludicrous. I can't believe someone is selling that piece.

The only real competition for the AppleTV is the Xbox360.

i don't see how appletv should be comparing to a game console who happen to do wireless media. Its even more off than the comparison between appletv and this MediaGate. AT least this MediaGate do the same thing (audio/video). $250, and does DivX/WMV/Mpeg4 etc

Awww... it's nice to see condescension goes both ways. From the article:

I really would hope that they're not implying the "iTunes crowd" is too incompetent to install a hard drive.

Somewhat unrelated, but an amusing anecdote to the "cheapness" factor: MediaGate's official support community. Hosted off a free host, and has advertisements inside the support area. I'm waiting for the day that Apple throws adverts into its support area, and begins to host them off a free forum host that begs for donations. Pretty professional. :D

well, these things have been around for quite a while, long before the apple tv was even announced of varying quality, thats one of the bad ones :p

and the appletv only scored 2 out of 5 in a british mac magazine, admitedly mostly because besides music we have zip all offical content for it, and the lack of native divx support

And that isn't much compitition, even with the spring dashboard update the media interface for Music and Video is still terrible, it does'nt come close to the Apple TV.

    Why not?

If the game console can serve as a game console AND work as a wireless media gateway better it really makes you wonder about how good the TV really is doesn't it?

    well, yeah, :D,
its sad, isn't it? some even said "xbox can't even come close to appletv", well, yeah, of course, wonder how many ppl in this world is treating xbox as a competitor to appletv, rather than PS3 and/or Wii.

I think something like this is more a competitor to the ATV.

    http://www.egoodz.com/product.asp?pf_id=3500TVISTO2500JB

Note: I don't have this and don't know how well it works, my point is just that a HDD that can connect straight to your tv and has more native formats would be a competitor.

Obviously it wouldn't be as easy to use and it doesn't have 802.11n but how hard is it to carry a HDD to your computer from the tv?
