I’m not sure this is going to hold up. CarPlay has added a ton more “punch through” capabilities that more than likely Rivian *could* use for the examples listed.

Because outside the United States, Apple Maps is pretty crummy and misses out many roads, so navigation is dire.

Moreover, if you are wondering how many people use Google Maps, the number is approximately 118 million users vs around 64 million for Apple Maps in the US, and over 1 billion users globally vs around 400m users for Apple Maps.

I'm also not sure if you have used Waze or not, but compared to Apple Maps, for navigation, it's light-years ahead of Apple.
It is nice when people want to use an outdated mapping system. Google is light-years behind Apple. I have never used Waze because I have not had a need to ever check out Waze. From the preview shots in the App Store, the maps look like cartoons, not like the better ones from the 1990s, but more like the really horrible ones shown today. Apple Maps has provided for my mapping needs from day one, so there has been no need to check out Waze. I do not need a second application that does something that the native application does better. If you want to use Waze, go right ahead. I will continue to use the better developed Apple Maps.

I have used both. No way Apple Maps is better than Waze LOL

I was a daily GPS app user for the longest time, so much like you, I've used both Apple Maps and Waze extensively -- though I've only used Google Maps very minimally. Regarding the former two apps, the reality is: Apple Maps does some things better, and Waze does other things better. Frankly, anyone who has used two or more very popular products and doesn't make a similar concession is almost certainly actively choosing to ignore flaws in their preferred product; in this particular comparison, I could easily cite multiple issues with both products... that is, if I wanted to make you so bored that you stop reading and blindly type out, "TLDR." 😆

For my personal usage, though, there was only one flaw that actually mattered. I've also made a habit of streaming music from either Apple Music or Pandora pretty nearly every day during my commute. The reason I ultimately had to give up on Waze was that over a period of several years, certain bugs affecting audio volume just. Never. Stayed. Fixed. I grew tired of dealing with the same issues returning about every few weeks, so I finally just stopped using Waze entirely. (And yes... I had reported the issue and noted that others had reported it as well.)

I'm not saying that Apple Maps is necessarily perfect... just that it's far more reliable for my particular use case. YMMV, of course.

(Mind you, I suppose all of this is kind'a irrelevant to this thread's original topic...)

It’s a BS excuse and the CEO knows it. He just wants to collect the customer data to sell to marketers. What a shame. Guess Polestar is getting more customers as a result of his greed.

Scaringe highlighted that CarPlay's inability to "leverage other parts of the vehicle experience" would necessitate users to exit the app for certain functions, such as opening the front trunk.

If -only- they could invent a tiny microswitch conveniently placed to enable such a function.

I liked Waze when I had my Outback using CarPlay because the maps were simpler visually. Also Apple Maps is annoying when you start up, like it is insisting that you enter a destination and is going to block off part of your screen with that menu till you enter something in. Waze is simple, not intrusive and I found the most accurate for showing police, construction, road issues, etc. I have a Tesla now and switch back and forth between sat maps and regular maps. Tesla is using Google for their mapping.

CarPlay itself seems cartoonish in comparison to the Tesla UI and I am guessing Rivian wants a more premium feel and to be in control of the eco system just like Apple does with their products.

Well, that does it. I was going to buy one each for me & the wife, but not now. Guess I'll just go with the matching Ferrari Romas.
