amazon and Rivian cut ties. they're no longer exclusive for vans. doesn't seem like their relationship is getting stronger
They did not cut ties. Amazon is the biggest single investor in Rivian, owning 16.33% of the company. Yes Amazon is buying other vans from other companies (because they need a lot of vans), but they would not likely let their investment go to 0 and probably would buy up Rivian or invest enough to keep it alive.

Telsa's are garbage and built with the quality of a soviet-era car lmao
model y was world's best selling car in 2023 lmao

Tesla sucks…
model y was world's best selling car in 2023

🥱
What does one have to do with the other?

If someone said "Microsoft Windows is garbage" or "Windows sucks," would you respond with "Microsoft Windows 10 was world's best selling operating system in 2023."?

Apple should create a next-gen CarPlay for companies that want to keep certain features their own (e.g., map) with far greater control over the look and feel of the overall experience.
I disagree. The reason people want CarPlay is precisely because of the ease of use of Apple Maps in navigation - all the other CarPlay stuff is secondary. I don't know Rivian's navigation system nor Tesla's (but my Tesla-owning friends often resort to using their smartphones, which tells you something) - but in the 40 years I've driven cars, I've never seen one that I would prefer over either Apple Maps or Google Maps. And for those who travel - nobody wants to learn every rental car manufacturer's navigation system when they already know CarPlay's or Android Auto's.

What Apple *should* do is allow the car manufacturers to *augment* Apple Maps with their own features. In the case of Rivian, I could imagine it being useful to see Rivian service centers and charging stations on the Apple Map and to allow routing to take those into account.

Don’t back it into a parking bollard. If you dent it, it may cost too much to fix and end up totaled.

This is more of a problem with Rivian’s (which is doomed anyway) but either way, all the kinks aren’t out of the electric car yet and in the end they are more expensive to own & drive, and harder on the environmental than the latest ICE vehicles.

I made my contribution to the environment by not having children. Not replacing yourself is the absolute BEST thing you can do to help Mother Nature.

I’d seriously be Loki g into getting on of these as my next vehicle, if it didn’t have the horrible headlights. I can’t stand the way the headlights look, makes the whole truck look like Gumby for some reason.

CarPlay can use almost any mapping app. Other car manufacturers could create an app to integrate what they want. They can even have AppleMaps in their app, using MapKit and overlay their charging stations and service center, and use Google Maps API the same way and give users the choice, AppleMaps or Google maps as the base. But they don’t, so I’m betting there is another reason they don’t use CarPlay.

q1 showed cash flow significantly worsened, lost $40k per unit sold.

that's a bankruptcy indicator

Q1 "loss" did increase from Q4 '23 but look at earlier quarters which were much worse than Q1 '24. They slowed the bleeding a little at least.

Q1 was also pre-refresh. Q2 refresh was all about cost savings. Gonna have to wait until Q4 to know what impact the new gen has.

Interesting that Rivian is working more closely with Apple. I wonder if they’ll continue to offer more features without going full CarPlay or whether the eventual end-game will be adding full CarPlay? My wife will be getting a R2 in a couple of years, and I know she would be much better served if it were CarPlay compatible. I’m holding out for the R3X, for now I’m keeping my non-CarPlay VW Touareg TDI going with its 750 mile per tank range and 30+mpg efficiency.

amazon and Rivian cut ties. they're no longer exclusive for vans. doesn't seem like their relationship is getting stronger
What happened:
TL;DR:
The agreement with Amazon, made in 2019, included provisions that barred Rivian from selling commercial vans to other customers and provided Amazon exclusive access to the vans for four years from when it began receiving the EVs.

Rivian reiterated its pledge to help Amazon put 100,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2030. Amazon says it’s rolled out more than 10,000 so far.

More sales of Rivian vans also helps Amazon, which owns a 17% stake in the electric car company.

context was the exclusivity deal.

it looks to me Amazon no longer wants 100k vans by 2030 as they seem to cut the order to 10k/year. bad signs ahead.

and now there are thousands of inventory cars sitting on parking lots with plummeting resale vales because people realize how crappy they are and nobody wants them lmao
I'm sure that has nothing to do with macro conditions and every single other EV player are doing as fine as before. lmao

of course, but at the current rate with what we know, 2025 looks bleak

the reiteration is to keep that 100k number alive but it looks to me Amazon no longer wants the 100k

Apple, you know what would be even better? My iPhone automatically flushing my toilet when I'm done.

Yeah yeah sure, I'm the only iPhone owner in the world that takes their iPhone into the WC.

Amazon is still into buying Rivian vans, as their spokesman says here:

Despite the WSJ’s report, Amazon says its deal with Rivian remains intact. “While nothing has changed with our agreement with Rivian, we’ve always said that we want others to benefit from their technology in the long run because having more electric delivery vehicles on the road is good for our communities and our planet,” Amazon spokesperson Kate Scarpa says in a statement to The Verge.

It's Rivian that wanted to renegotiate after Amazon was buying only the bare minimum in their agreement.

Regardless of the deal they are still linked by stock ownership. So it's very doubtful there would be an absolute dissolution of Rivian, at the least Amazon would find them a buyer or investor or more than one buyer or replace the management or what-not.
