I use both a 15" rMBP and iPP. Carry both with me every day.

This is my task split:

  • iPP:
    • Browsing
    • Email (Google Inbox)
    • Taking notes in class (currently doing a PhD)
    • Written homework (I've completely given up paper at this point)
    • Studying
    • Code reviews (I can kick back on the couch and look at colleagues code on Github and comment)
    • Meeting notes
    • Playing games
    • Arguing on the Internet (doing it right now!)
  • rMBP:
    • Programming (my PhD is in Computational Nuclear Engineering... The balance of my research involves development of massively parallel codes for using supercomputers to simulate nuclear reactors - I won't be doing that work on an iPP any time soon)
    • Journal article writing (Latex is still better done on a real laptop at this time, but it's getting better on iOS)
    • Presentations (PowerPoint, Keynote and Beamer... I'm not ready to do those on my iPP)
On balance, I use my iPP for many more hours during the week... but the rMBP still does essential work. I don't regret carrying both, because they're both awesome at their particular tasks... So I have no compromises.

Don't you feel too heavy to carry both? In the past I always carry 15" rMBP and iPad I feel too heavy to take them I decided to leave rMBP at home and use my iPad Air 2 with me everyday. I wish I had either rMB or 13" MBA.

how is this done?

and does that mean a remote PC to leave it on at all times no sleep mode?

No - but I carry a lot of stuff everyday. I have a nice backpack... that helps a lot ;-)

Why bring both? Why not just bring your iPad and remote into your laptop at home?

Just doesn't work with what I need to do. While the actual act of programming can be done that way (hell, I do it in Emacs which I can do in a Terminal emulator with SSH into any of my machines)... but I run a lot of 3D modeling applications that just don't translate well through VNC on a touchscreen.

I actually have 3 cylinder (hah, "3 cylinder" ;-) Mac Pros to help with the work... they stay permanently on at home and in my office and my laptop farms out computational work to them. Those are backed by a 16,000 core Linux cluster for when the jobs get really big. So I'm not at all a stranger to remote computing... but there are parts of my workflow that still need very local computing (like right in my lap).

I use Splashtop between my iPP and my iMac and I have disabled the sleep/hibernate settings on my Mac throughout the day. I enable the screensaver though (which allows access to Mac). I have a schedule in the evenings that turns my Mac on sleep mode at 8pm and turns sleep off/wakes my Mac at 8am. That way my Mac is always ready during the day when I want to access it remotely through my iPP. I also restart/boot up my Mac weekly. I found that I could not access my Mac remotely without disabling sleep mode and found that this works for me. HTH

I see... I am not comfortable leaving remote PC on all day for fear of someone come in and access it. How does wake up work?

Sorry I am new to remote access. How can someone access my Mac remotely without knowing my Splashtop password? Newbie question I know

They can't

If you are referring to badrottie's post, I think he is talking about someone walking in to the room his computer is in, and accessing it.

how is this done?
I use splashtop which required almost no setup at all. Just download the app for your iPad and then an app on your Mac (the streamer) and sign in. Boom. Done. Splashtop also has pretty good UI tricks so you can manage the desktop on an iPad with fingers. Like if I hold down on an icon, it right clicks. If I hold and move, it drags Windows. If I double tap, I can get a full on mouse function.

Works very well
