I know we don't know the exact benchmarks yet, but people seem to think the GPU almost won't handle the retina resolution. And will be really slow when using scaled mode (although Apple says it will do up to 1440x900).

So... How bad is it? Won't I even be able to play a 2D game from app store? Like a TD or so?

Will it play streamed 1080p flawlessly?

People are scaring me when they're suggesting the rMB's GPU is lowest of the low.

It's probably at least as good as the iPad GPU.

The trouble with this list is that it merely says the games will run, there's not even some general indication of frame rates for whatever screen resolution with whatever quality settings used - just that those games effectively will run in some capacity.

"The games listed are a sample of the popular games that play great at 30 frames per second or higher on Intel® Core™ M Processors with Intel® HD Graphics 5300.

Titles marked with 1 will require the user to manually lower some of the game settings."

and

Configuration: Intel tested these games on a computer with Intel® Core™ M 5Y71 processor featuring Intel® Iris™ HD Graphics 5300, 4GB of system memory Microsoft Windows 8.1* with the power policy set to balanced mode.

straight from that link, sentence 2 implying default setting chosen by game. It's a decent list but I wasn't expecting crysis 3 on there or anything.

It'll do just fine.

Just like people thought the first rMBP's GPU wouldn't handle it without constantly using the discrete one, and just like they thought the iMac 5K's GPU wouldn't either.

Just like they do every single time Apple gets something out.

Again, it does say at what screen resolution and with what quality settings; nobody cares that a game can run smoothly if it has to be set at 1024x768 on a screen capable of a lot higher, with everything turned off/down and textures that look like fresh mud.

This wasn't built for gaming.

If you want to game, you need to get a gaming laptop or (at minimum) a rMBP.

I know, I wasn't the one who brought up this list of games that can run on Core M - we know it's going to suck for gaming and it's pretty much a given it was never meant for anyone to play games on, but some folks seem to think (or want to believe) they'll be able to anyway.

Mentioning gaming and the rMB together is pointless. People on this forum love to complain about a product and the complaints usually refer to things the product wasn't even made to do. Pointing out that the rMB will struggle with gaming is like pointing out that an SUV will struggle with track use compared to a car that is designed for that use. Matter of fact, you sound totally lost if you're buying any Mac for gaming. If you want to game, buy a PC. The rMB was made for web browsing, checking emails, watching videos, listening to music, and other various tasks that would be similar. The rMBP was made for all those reasons + for those who do professional photography/graphic design. Gaming with a higher end Mac is obviously possible, but it's probably reason 50 why you would want to buy one.

Right. And, the good part is that you may find stylish ultrabook PC laptops made for gaming. Something lightweight, sleek and powerful like a Razer Blade would be the perfect candidate. Although I love my MacBook Pro, I do enjoy my peppy Razer for gaming on the go. It has a 3200x1800 touchscreen too. But it runs Windows 8.1... I'm fine with that thoug.

It'll probably handle Starcraft 2 on low settings reasonably well actually. Older games will be alright, but don't expect spectacular performance. I might try RCT3 for fun, but I certainly won't be using my rMB for any real gaming.

I agree. I tried running starcraft 2 on lowest settings on a 2007 macbook pro 15", and it ran at about 30 fps. So, the macbook should be able to play it on low settings too.

Still, this by no means a powerful GPU, so I wouldn't expect much.

Gaming shd be the least of our concern. My concern is whether the GPU can even be sufficient for 2D operations at the retina display's native resolution.

Of course it can, don't be obtuse.

But will it be powerful enough for a SNES Emulator like Snes9x? :(

I was running it on a 233Mhz Toshiba laptop a good 15 years ago. I dare say an original clamshell iBook from 1999 would run it without breaking into a sweat.

Of course GPU will handle the native retina resolution and even an external display (it's mentioned on tech specs).

Of course it will handle Atari, NES, SNES, Genesis, Etc Emulators. Don't expect a PS2/PS3/Xbox One…

For casual games I simply use my iOS device. If you want better experience in a big screen, use a PS4 or Xbox One. Unfortunately some games are made for computers like Starcraft.

When it comes out I would like to see a video showing how the rMB handles Starcraft 2.

Of course I'm not excpecting a gaming laptop, so I'll give up pretty much all 3D games. But that's okay.

As long as I can play my SNES games on portably that's fine. :)
