I have the 1.1Ghz Macbook and can happily watch and AirPlay any 1080p video at 60fps with zero stutter or playback issues so I can't understand that your issue is down to the performance. I'm actually surprised at just how good this little beauty performs.

And I've just tested AirPlay from it live streaming 'High' and 'Source' quality Twitch broadcasts with zero lag.

I'm jealous that this works for you. For now I have to watch twitch streams through VLC player and use Chatty for chat just to get a smooth experience with/without airplay. I read that not all of twitch's streamers are broadcasting in html 5 yet, wonder if that has to do with your smooth playback. I mainly watch Lirik.

OK, I will try to give some details to my situation. Please keep in mind that I got my rMB 4 days ago and I have absolutely no OS X experience prior to that. So far I really like it, but that streamed video chopiness is strange.

My issue is quite pronounced in this video, which is actually the first in the list, when you search for '1080p':
I can clearly see the video not running smoothly in the scenes with the icebergs, which is still within the first minute. I can see it in other scenes, too, but it is most pronounced with the icebergs.
It does not matter if I use Safari or Firefox and I also upgraded from OS X Yosemite to El Capitan which didn't make a difference (I didn't upgrade for that reason of course).

My internet speed is 25 Mbit and the video playback almost never uses more than 5 Mbit.

Thanks for the tip. Since I used Windows for 20 years I just stuck with what I knew what was working well for me in the last couple of years and that was VLC. I will give Movist a try.

If you need any further information just let me know.

Edit: By the way, on my last Windows machine with a top of the line i7 CPU from 2013 and a discrete graphics card the videos also run a little choppy, but it is less pronounced and I might just see it because the 24 fps framerate is relatively low. Plus the judder on this machine is very regular, like a micro judder going on numerous times per second. With the rMB it's more like 2-3 distinct judders per second.

I hope I expressed myself well enough, English is not my native language ;)

I would look at several files, I streamed & downloaded this one and even on far more powerful hardware than the rMB is seems to stutter ever so slightly. I downloaded again in a non HD format and it still stutters. So I think this more related to the source.

There is also the fact that all LCD screens suffer judder. That 1080p scenery video plays back without hiccup on my 1.2 rMB but there is still some of what I would call LCD judder in the panning scenes. That's inherent in the technology and has nothing to do with the CPU. I tried the Twitch stream on the main page and it played back at the highest resolution without trouble although I have no idea if there is more to it than that on that site.

Interesting I "pulled" the file from Youtube and it still judders on an i7 Quad Core, maybe it`s perceptual and some are more sensitive to it than others.

It's why when I needed a 'new' tv last year I bought a used Panasonic plasma over a new LCD. It's really noticeable to me on tv's especially for movies and sports.

Thank you all for the feedback you posted to my example video.

Could someone please post a 1080p Youtube video that runs perfectly fine on a MBP, so I can check if it runs choppy on my rMB? This way I can say for sure if there is an issue with the rMB.

I'll just confirm that the youtube video has the "lcd judder" on both my Mac Pro and my rMB... so the issue has nothing to do with the rMB specifically. (tested on 100mb/s internet)

It's possible it's not as noticeable on low-res displays.

I wanted to share that performance with media is about 70% times better after updating to 10.11.1 and this weeks flash update. I can at least watch twitch live streams + video on demand on high settings, same for nexflix/hulu and VLC through HDMI at 1080p without any lag spikes or insane jitter.

Only thing I haven't had a chance to test yet is Apple TV mirroring/extending performance.

Last week I was also having issues with the entire Mac becoming unresponsive except for the mouse when multitasking and required a hard restart each time it happened. That seems to be fixed too.

Nice, that at least confirms that the hardware is fine for stuff like that.

How's the heat situation when streaming 1080p videos?

Until your providers diminish the use of Flash, it will remain the same. Adobe Flash is literally poison to OS X, and from a security perspective a "weak link in the chain" Same with VLC it will push the CPU harder than other applications that use purely hardware acceleration. For your usage you would be far better off with a 13" rMBP, certainly you would not incur any of the issue in this thread.

Funny to see your post. I have used that video for testing for a long time. The iceberg glitch happens on every machine in an Apple store, not sure why on my I5 Surface Pro 3 its pretty smooth. Must be software
