    Hi All,

Just got my first mac. Logged into my account for the first time since I registered in 2008, heh.

I have a Dell U3011. I also have a HDMI cable (which the Apple store gave me :) ) and a DVI -> Thunderbolt connection.

Both only give me 1920x1600. Which is okay. But my monitor supports 2560x1600. Both with Ubuntu and Mac the option is the same (limited to 1920). I read somewhere on the internet that people have got higher external resolution using Windows. I might give this a try.

On Ubuntu I was able to use xrandr and force the thunderbolt to 2560x1600. It did work, but the text looked horrible. If I try and do the same with HDMI, it just goes black. I have not tried SwitchResX yet. But I'm not planning to use Mac OS X.

Is there anyway I can get 2560x1600 on my u3011 with HDMI or Thunderbolt? (hopefully HDMI).

    Thanks

HDMI won't go that high, you need a MiniDP to Dual-link DVI converter.

They are $80-$100 depending on which one you get, Apple sells one as well as places like MonoPrice.

Well the cable you linked will work. I assume "MINIDP -> HDMI" is a typo as the link is a for a mDP -> DP cable.

    awesome!

    Thanks all, ordered :).

I did get 3 screens working (including laptop) using 1 x hdmi, 1 x display -> dvi. Was pretty impressive.
