That's like saying: Our car gets 50 mpg! But only if you use our special Toyota Gas and drive only on special Toyota Certified Roads.

Well....it kinda is......

This car gets 50mpg, but only highway miles, and only on bright sunny days with no curves and no air conditioning....its how they test and rate it.

In reality if you use an inferior gas, in the city, with AC running full blast, and come back saying you didnt get 50 mpg.....then thats kinda on you.

Turn down brightness, use the browser they rated it for if you want to get their battery times.

#3 Battery Life: I know the advertised battery life is like 8 hours or so, but in my day to day use it last a max of 3, usually around 2ish, on maximum brightness, iTunes playing music, and Google Chrome with plenty of tabs open.

So does that mean other laptops you've used lasts for 30 minutes?

Well, your biggest problem is probably keeping the screen at 100%. If you floored your care everywhere you went, you wouldn't get anywhere near 50 mpg.

The second thing is that Chrome and other browsers are not as efficient in power usage. How is that Apples fault? Apple made their browser efficient. Depending on the car, using a different octane gas can significantly change the gas mileage, as well as harm the engine and/or make it run like ****.

The other thing I will say is my wife uses the 13". She also uses Chrome. Her Mackbook gets like 10 hours of battery.

Did apple pay you to write this anti-consumer post with a dubious claim at the end? Yeah, sure, enjoy your over 10 hour battery life of your "wife", more than apple's BS claims say.

"#2 Volume: This device is softer than the iPad volume.. WTF?"

As far as volume goes, I have the same issue. Its just not loud enough. Try downloading an app called BOOM. I believe its $4.99. It works great. It even has an equalizer. Good luck

#1 Brightness: I am always reaching for the brighter button but it's always on max. The device feels like it's quite dim compared to all of my other devices (iPad 3, iPhone 5, ASUS PC and even my old Macbook Pro '09).

Otherwise it's pretty solid but quite disappointed in these areas. Anyone with the same issues?

I have the 15 inch, an I have none of these problems. Maybe it's just the 13...

No, I didn't get paid to write that. If you don't want to believe it then don't. I have no reason to lie.

My battery life is also poor 3-4 hours if I am continuously using it... because of Chrome so I hear.
I am just too used to it, and also don't like Safari. I love my add-ons, the syncing across all platforms/my phone. So far have had to sacrifice battery life for that. Not sure how well that will go in the long term. I am going to try using Safari for a few days to make sure its Chrome the problem and not the laptop.
Brightness is a bit low, but I haven't had a problem, just I use it above what I used my old MB 13" on.
And same with sound, a bit quiet, but luckily I have only been using the sound when alone or minimum people around so I can hear clearly.

Other than that, I agree. It is quite a powerful laptop. The only other issue I had was comparing it to an 11" MBA my sister has, my new rMBP was slower at loading previews of large .dng files vs hers. Strange. And when editing a RAW file in Photoshop about 34mb it was lagging/flickering as I scrolled. :\

Makes me laugh when neewbies jump on her hurling accusations of trolling! Anyway,

Indeed, i have noticed the significant dimmer screen. Since, i use an external monitor at home, the dimness was only recently made apparent when i was turning the screen brightness to max, i was watching a movie on the the train at the time. On my 2011 17 MBP, i would often have my screen at 75% whilst on the move, which i have equated to 100% brightness on the rMBP.

#2 Volume: This device is softer than the iPad volume.. WTF?
This was quite subtle for me, and definitely not an issue. I use my external logitech speakers whilst at home, and earbud-headphones whilst on the move. The lower sound volume is imho very minor issue for me, but again is noticeable.

#3 Battery Life: I know the advertised battery life is like 8 hours or so, but in my day to day use it last a max of 3, usually around 2ish, on maximum brightness, iTunes playing music, and Google Chrome with plenty of tabs open.
Here i must disagree, i have found the battery life to be excellent. Compared to my hold MBP, i regularly get 6-8hrs on the move, which is plenty for me, as i endeavour to plug the little fella to the mains, any chance i get.

Otherwise it's pretty solid but quite disappointed in these areas. Anyone with the same issues?

Agree, outstanding machine, it is lighting fast, and really light weight, what more can one want.
- only issue for me was i head x2 DOA.. luckily apple genius at the Trafford centre was fantastic, and made it his mission to not let me leave without a working machine, set-up with all my files and user data!

Thanks for a reasonable response. Those are rare these days, when you criticize an apple product people seem to take it personally.

LOL... you have to consider the audience here, and the way you lead into the thread. Some of the people on here have been part of an Apple users group of some kind for nearly 35 years - a very proud. and sometimes defensive, bunch.

Our mbpr 15", early '13 looks fine when the brightness is set at 1 click below max. Anything less and it's just not usable - it almost looks like an lcd without backlighting. It's almost as if the brightness slider was set incorrectly, or needs another few points above max brightness to balance out the differences between dim and bright.

It's not necessarily a problem, but it is noticeable compared to our 13" mba (late '11), where I can run at one click above full dim and still have a perfectly acceptable screen brightness (at least in a less than bright room - like the hotel I'm in now).

The problem piece with the brightness is battery life - I'm more likely to grab the mba than the mbpr when I travel because of this. And this is comparing a mba with a steadily declining battery health to a newish mbpr.
