I'd recommend LR over Aperture any day. It's a far superior product.

Upsides, speed and more plugins available.

Downsides You'll have to buy it.

However you can try before you buy. Adobe do make trial versions (with no feature crippling - just time limits) available on their website.

TBH if you're used to a 13" screen, you'll be fine with either the 13 or 15 rMBP without an external monitor. Both notebooks have a higher resolution than a 27" thunderbolt display and you can take advantage of it by using an application called change resolution

Of the 2 I'd recommend the 15" as the discrete GPU, quad core CPU and availability of 16GB ram will allow you to configure a machine that'll easily last 3-4 years.

if so, LR users: what are the downsides of LR vs Aperture 3?
None that I can think of. LR is so good I'm convinced Adobe really has nothing to do with.

I also feel that Apple has lost their way in the pro arena and has made it clear that "general consumerism" is their bread and butter now.

I sold my old MacAir for a very good price.
The new MBP 13 only cost me $300 out of pocket after the sale-
and it has been well worth the upgrade.
I have an external cinema display.
all is great.

My plan was to try it out and maybe ditch the display and trade up to the 15inch.
But the 13 is great. Might be all I need.
I may still ditch the display and use the ipad as the second screen.

I haven't heard the fans yet.
Which was NOT the case with the Air- fans went on ALL the time.

I could use an external monitor. I do not have one at the moment, but always thought about it. I could, then buy a 13" rMBP but again will it be enough for Aperture? will I see a big difference with my mb? it seems that everyone has a different opinion on the forum on whether or not the 13" rMBP is powerful enough vs the 15" rMBP to handle photo editing.

At the moment, my macbook is sometimes taking more than 30 seconds to open pictures in Aperture and to display them correctly, then editing them is quite slow as well! do you think the Adobe LR will be faster? if so, LR users: what are the downsides of LR vs Aperture 3?

Hi, as great a computer as yours was back in 2008, it is now an old one, so if you were to buy any new macbook pro, dual or quad, you would see a huge improvement.

Now the 15 inches is heavier than the 13 inches, not by much but if you have to carry it around all day it might make a difference. In my case, I only take it with me once every 2 weeks or so, so the weight is not a problem. And even with the bigger screen I use my 27 inches iMac as an external display. But imo, a quad is more future proof .

My wife and I had both a early 2008 15 inches MBP with dual core and when I changed mine for a 2012 CMBP 15 inches my wife choose a 13 inches MBA. And as good as the 2008's were, the MBA is rocket fast compared to them.

LR stands for Adobe lightroom right? I imported a high definition picture almost instantly in my quad core, LR 4 is not installed in the wife's MBA but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be that bad. I don't have aperture installed so I can't compare, sorry.

Whatever you choose, dual or quad, you'll be good to go.

ok thanks for all your suggestions! I think I will get the rMBP 15" even if it's not as easy to carry than the 13" and time for me to switch to Adobe LR I'm afraid...

I got my 2013 15" 8gb 256gb yesterday, i have a late 09 27" iMac, the mac will be only used for movies or tv and back ups now. This mbpr screen is so nice compared to the iMac. I will be staying with the macbook even if the imac dies. 15" is a good size. Got a samsung screen too.
