Depends on the source of the video the resolution the coding etc, my 2013 rMBP plays almost anything from itself with no issues at all, but stick flash on streaming from the internet in chrome and watch it heat up fast.
15" MBP`s run hot, equally video playback should not spool up the fans, unless Flash is involved. For many codecs video is decoded in hardware and has little impact on CPU utilisation.
Did any of you read the OP's comment? He went from Yosemite to El Capitan and he is now experiencing higher temps during video playback. So what is different from El Cap vs. Yosemite that would cause higher temps? That is probably what the OP would like to know...

Not that I know of but that doen't mean that things like specific video playback apps or browsers etc haven't got issue/need an update to work well with El capitan, or have a driver issue etc. It may even be something to do with metal implementation.
If this happens with all video from all sources in all apps accross the board then fair enough it's an El capitan problem but my 2013 13 inch rMBP has shown no differences playing video on VLC since the change to el capitan, in fact I think it's better fans spin up less and less often and I have felt no heat increases.
