Hi everyone

Nice to hear that we finally have the 2018 versions of our MBP :)

Here is my dilemna :

I currently have a 2013 13' macbook air (1,7 GHz Intel Core i7 / 8Go / 256GO)
The "crapppy" screen makes me cry each time i want to work on it.
I often connect it on my 2011 imac i7 (thunderbolt screen share) to be confortable.

My question is : What 2018 RMBP would you take if you were in my position (with such an old MBA),
working for Pictures APP, Adobe CC, Front and Back Web dev, retrogaming... could you please help me choose between 13' and 15' - and what processor / Ram amount ...

Thanks....

If your current Air is sufficing your needs, then the base models of either will be more than adequate.

I'd splash for a 15" if you can, really depends on how portable and how much you use it. If it's your primary machine, then a 15" will be better. If you use a desktop and just need something to travel with, then the 13" will be best.

my first need is space (the actual resolution of my MBA (1440*900) is terrible.
I can't even test my responsive website in a chrome tab without having to extend the window and going from left to right to test all of my resolution configurations.
It s my primary machine, and i have to choose well..
So do i keep my imac for external screen (connect. thunderbolt) and go for a 13
or do i sell it and go for a 15...

You should be able to be very happy with a 13" model. When in need of a larger canvass, connect it to the iMac. 15" is not bad either, but there is a small size and weight difference that might matter to you (or not) depending on how mobile you are with the machine. If it stays on the desk mostly, go for 15 as it is far more powerful and will last longer.

EDIT: I see you need space, then check out the 15" ones. Or, if portability is a concern, look into the 13" and an external 4K monitor (depending on what size your iMac is) as this will be a cheaper option than getting a 15" MBP.

As @New_Mac_Smell said, both will be more then adequate updates

Both machines will be a huge upgrade in resolution and you will be able to adjust the scaling if the default scaling does not give you enough space.

How many inches are your iMac?

If you do not care much about 0.5kg (1lb) weight difference how about sell the iMac and go with a 15" (will outperform the iMac anyway) and look into getting a monitor if you need more space at home.
This way you will have a great machine with plenty of screen for out and about, + the option to hook up to even more space when home. you could do the same with the 13", but having the dGPU in the 15" might be preferable for longevity

There is also the option of going with 13" and getting the eGPU, if needed. OP needs to weigh in the priorities and the choice should become clearer with each strike! :D

My imac is a 2011 27' inch (2560 * 1440) i7.

Is the 13' RMBP a real speedbump / 2013 MBA? (the screen would be a real change)
Do you think it would be better to get the 15' and sell the imac?

Is it possible to get the 13', get the egpu and connect it to my imac in thunderbolt (screen share mode)?

I'd buy a run-out or refurb 2015 13" Pro model.

IMHO the 2018 models are a disappointment. All they got was CPU spec bumps to the stuff that came out 6 months ago. The GPUs in the 15" are still massively behind, the jury is still out on the keyboard and they're still massively over-priced for what you get now.

I do not think that it is possible, nor feasible. Come to think of it, the 2018 machined and a eGPU will use thunderbolt 3 and your iMac is thunderbolt 2.

Yes it is, the 2013 i7 air has a Geekbench score of aprox. 3500 single core and 6600 multi core, where as the 2018 13", which does not have any official test yet, but I expect it to be around 4000 for single core, and 10000 for multi core (I rather be a little conservative with the numbers) which will be a really good speed post, especially due to the extra cores

Uhm, the CPUs were released by intel in Q2, the ones used in the 13" doesn't seem to be available in anything else yet so no they did not come out 6 months ago.

For once they seem to be using the latest and greatest in their update, most likely why they released it now and not at WWDC, the CPUs were not ready yet.

I am debating the same as TS here, I ordered a 13" with 16 GB when I saw there was an update but I am thinking of changing it to a 15". Running a 12" Macbook today and I am very happy with it because of the size so I think a 15" might be too much.

I can t decide..
If i can sell my imac 800euros i can offer the difference with the 15'...

You really should visit a store and handle the two machines. You will love both, but without handling them you wouldn't be able to figure out for yourself which one fits your bill most.

If you can live with it, the 15" would be a worthy desktop replacement for you. BUT! bear in mind additional costs if you're struggling with a budget, you'd need to buy a few adapters/cables, cases/bags etc. It would be more powerful than the iMac, but consider other things such as whether you need the portability as you're always sacrificing other areas - not to mention you may want a monitor which is another cost.

can someone (european student) has the percentage of reduction on a 13' base macbook pro 2018 and a 15' base macbook pro 2018? thanks.

Has the ram and cpu options the sema percentage of reductions?

I’m in a similar situation, I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 15” and after yesterday’s MBP update I’m very tempted to get one. The update is a great one to be honest, True Tone display, T2 security chip, “Hey Siri” faster specs and more Pro spec options (although some are complaining about price).

My thinking is to get what you can now, since you can’t update any of the specs at a later date, someone correct me if I’m wrong but if you get the higher processor and Ram (ie going from 8GB to 16GB Ram) now the longer your machine will last.

The 13” MacBook Pro has a quad core processor so it’s like taking the 15” from last year and putting it in the 13” if this year. The 15” has 6 core processor which is huge really and something you probably won’t take full advantage of (unless your doing serious 4K video editing in multiple streams or so on).
