Is the audio port on the rMBP just a headset? I thought somewhere I saw that it's a dual linein - headset port?

Removed in the rMBP and 13inch MBP.

Because they are a company and saving 50 cents on a port increases their margins.

For Professional use, HDMI/TB provide much larger bandwidth for digital sound. An adapter or DAC can fix ur need.

However, usually the line-in/line-out transform can be achieved by software.
