After updating to 10.8.2. This is the first time I've seen this that after closing the lid (and confirming it was sleep the Apple logo was dark) I went to sleep, literally, and after waking up heard a loud sound and realized it was my laptop fans ramped up to 4000 RPM on both fans. I have no idea why this has happened as this is the first time.

If the fans are spinning up, it's likely not in sleep mode. Try resetting the SMC.
